"Perfectly. I have had several plowing businesses over the last 30 years, and these guys are the best. They came at the time they said they would, within 15 minutes or so, and cleared ALL of the driveway, not just what looked like enough, all for a VERY reasonable fee. I would recommend them to anyone who asked."

"Brett and his team at RMD & Son Contracting willing took on a job that we were having difficulty finding anyone to even give an estimate for. While others thought the job was too difficult or too small, Brett promptly came out to inspect and provide an estimate. The job was completed today. The team went above and beyond and I highly recommend them."

"I'm ashamed that it has taken me this long to get around to writing a review for Alex and his team. What prompted this is he texted me this morning asking how we were, how everything was with the addition, and if anything needed addressing - who does that a year and a half after project completion? Easy answer - a person who you should work with, if given the opportunity. We knew Alex was "the guy" after we met him and got our initial quote. Before meting him, we received numerous outrageous quotes from (very) popular local contractors. In addition to the quotes being ridiculous, these contractors were also never confident in the job, which seemed odd to us, because the scope of the project didn't seem insane. Alex comes in, says no problem, verifies that it's totally possible, and a couple weeks later we have a vetted blue print and an exceptionally reasonable quote. When we decided to pull the trigger on dormering out our attic to add two rooms and a bathroom, we had little to no idea as to what the job really entailed (roofline, heat zoning, access to the rest of our house, etc.). Alex was in constant communication with us each step of the way, and in an extremely accommodating manner, where he gracefully put up with us changing our minds on certain things. Example, my wife decided we should have lights in the closet - the sheetrock was already up, but Alex said no problem and threw lights in there. A larger example - we decided that we should also finish the space above our garage - again, no problem. If you have a job, big or small, and are able to work with Alex and his team, I cannot recommend it enough. I believe building and maintaining client relationships is the life-blood of a successful business. It is clear as day that Alex has mastered this concept. This is a team you need in your corner."

"Met with Ian to discuss our project. He seemed professional and knowledgeable and like he was excited to work on the job. He requested a check to secure our spot in the schedule and have an engineer work on the drawing. After a few weeks, I reached out for an update and was told things were moving along and we were still on target for the start we discussed. I attempted to reach out again to see about drawings since start date was a month away. The phone number isn?t in service and no response to texts or emails. Drawings? Nope. Building permit? Nope. Money? Gone."

"I had a great experience hiring Mario to replace my bathroom vanity faucet. He was super friendly, professional, and did excellent work. The old faucet was worn and outdated, and the new one looks fantastic. The installation was done carefully, everything works perfectly, and his attention to detail really shows. I would absolutely recommend Mario and will definitely hire him again for future projects."

"Work completed was up to par, but the communication of the owner is poor. Money was demanded for uncompleted work. Due to a sad story being told, full payment was dispersed only to not hear from the owner. Text messages and phone calls were completely ignored. It was only when contacted by my lawyer from an unknown number there was a response. Dates and times were given for the job started to be completed and he has yet to fulfill his obligation. Not only was his lack of communication an issue, but once the job was discussed and terms and payment were agreed upon, more money was demanded, therefore outrageously changing the cost of the job that was thoroughly discussed. Way more materials were purchased than necessary for the jobs. Him and his workers did not always clean up after themselves., which lead to my tire being punctured. If you have a strong desire to work with a dishonest contractor lacking the ability to communicate as a business man I would highly recommend R&A. "

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Duanesburg, NY

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
