"If there were more stars, I would have given them! You will not find a better contractor! I am truly impressed with the quality of work and it seems there is nothing Bill or Angie can’t do. I absolutely love my kitchen remodel! They are both fabulous people!"

"Scott has very high standards of quality, his work and attention to detail is exceptional. If there is a choice during the project to do something the cheap way or the right way, he chooses the right way every time. Scott is very knowledgeable about construction (Iâ m not kidding, he seems to know everything!) and will make sure your project is done properly and beautifully. He is able to explain what is happening and needs to happen with the project. He thought of details I didnâ t and asked the necessary questions to be sure I got what I wanted in a cost effective, high quality manner. He also makes appropriate decisions on his own that are in line with what youâ re wanting to have done. He will make suggestions on things that you may not think of that can make your project better. All this and he is personable and professional, he is very easy to work with. Scott replaced my front steps/deck with a beautiful new set. Once the old steps were taken apart, he realized the stringers and supporting beams were not in good condition and replaced them all. This wasnâ t part of the plan but he wanted our new steps to be safe and built right. I am so appreciative that he did this the right way: showing me the problem and discussed options to solve it, rather than just continuing on with the plan and using the old parts that werenâ t safe. And the new steps are gorgeous! A great feature on our home. Scott also replaced the siding on our 24x24 double car garage. He extended the eaves on the gable ends of the roof and then took off and replaced all the siding and trim. He was great at saving costs when possible but without cutting corners on quality. He really takes pride in his work and it shows. His work was a beautiful update to our garage. Overall Scott is a great person to work with, he has a great sense of humor while being professional, knowledgeable and kind. If you donâ t know anything about construction, he can help you in a respectful manner. If you do know something he can work with you to create what you are looking for. He will take care of details for the project (like scheduling dumpster delivery and removal), and he can be trusted on your property if you are not there. I felt that his labor cost is appropriate for his quality of work. His fees are similar to others in our area but his work and professionalism exceeds the rest so you may feel youâ re getting a bargain!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Duluth, MN

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
