My grandfather, Salem M. Eways, came to the United States as a Stone Mason. In the late 1920s, he began selling fine textiles door-to-door in New York City, until he and his brother found an opportunity to earn money cleaning and repairing rugs. With dedication and hard work, they built the business and eventually grew into 4 stores in the Pennsylvania region. Salem then moved to Charlottesville in the early 1960s and opened a store named Salem M. Eways Oriental Rugs, located in University shopping center on Old Ivy Rd. After the passing of my grandfather, my father, Frank S. Eways, a state trooper in Pennsylvania at the time, left his job and moved his family to Charlottesville to take care of the family business. He eventually moved the store to Emmet St. across from Bodo’s Bagels, where he then grew the business to one of the largest sellers of oriental rugs in the United States in the mid-1970s. Eventually all of the Eways brothers joined together to become one of the largest and most respected flooring companies in the region. For over 85 years, and three generations, the Eways family has been providing the finest area rugs, rug care and maintenance. We have reached the world to bring you the best quality rugs available. "It was obvious from the minute we met with Aaron Sheaves that he was experienced, patient, and knew how to interpret what we wanted when we weren't even exactly sure! We are experienced home remodelers and it was great to work with someone who completely met our very high expectations and requirements. Aaron was extremely detail oriented and responsive, had great recommendations for products and colors that would look best with the overall vibe of the house, and kept us informed every step of the process with daily text updates/pictures. Project was completed on time. The floors are absolutely gorgeous and we couldn't be happier. To say he went above and beyond is an understatement and we plan to hire him again within the year when we remodel our kitchen and master bathroom. We can't recommend Sheaves Floors highly enough!"

"Botched install AND reinstall; dismissive, rude staff Flooring purchased and installed in our home in 2023 and joints began to separate within months. When I reported this by phone to Floor Fashions, I was advised to glue the pieces together using wood glue. Glue failed and another joint started bowing. I went back to the company in June 2024 then waited three months for reinstallation. After another month, the reinstalled pieces are now separating as well. Visited showroom to demand resolution. The response of the warehouse manager – responsible for reinstall – was to note that I had not responded to a follow-up call placed three days after the reinstall (seriously). When I explained thst as a customer it’s my responsibility to pay – not to return his calls, his response was “this conversation is over” and walked away. Exchange was witnessed by sales associate who sold us the flooring. Images show install and reinstall."

"This process has been nothing but a headache. I got quotes from a couple of different companies for click together LVT. Floors Are Us came in the lowest and I liked this product the best so I hired then for the job. After I paid for the material Justin told me he would give me a call the next week to schedule a date for install. That week came and went and after an unanswered email and two phone calls I finally was able to schedule an install. I was told the installer would arrive between 8:30 and 9AM and to have all of the appliances, furniture, and toilet removed. I got up early and moved everything outside in preparation: stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, toilet, etc. 9:30 came and went so I called Justin to find out what was going on. He said the installer was held up by traffic but was on his way. Justin also informed me that on the "very complicated" square footage calculation he made a mistake and didn't order enough floor. We agreed that the installer would put down what they had and then come back later to complete the job. I got another call at 10:30 saying that "the guy upstairs" ordered the wrong floor, that it was a new product etc, and that they would not be able to get the correct floor for two more weeks. I now had to move everything back inside and apologize to my tenant and explain that we were going to have to repeat the process in two weeks. To weeks later I call to make sure the correct product is in and we were actually moving forward with the install. I'm told all is well and that the installer would arrive between 8:30-9AM. I wake up early again and move everything outside once more. 10AM rolls around so I call the office and am told the installer is held up in traffic and will arrive shortly. The installer doesn't show up until 11AM to start work. Overall the work by the third party installer is good, but at the end of the job around 6PM it is clear they are in a hurry to leave. They didn't bring enough shoe molding to finish so I agree to sort that out with the store. They swept up the large pieces of debris but I was left with a floor covered in dust because they were using the miter saw, they had to borrow from me, inside the house. They also dumped some of the construction debris into an old trash can I was waiting to throw away that was missing a bottom (thanks). Two weeks after the install I get a call from Justin wanting to settle up for the balance. I tell him how disappointed I am with the entire process and that I'm ready to be done with it. He apologized and offers to have the installer come back and finish the shoe moulding, but after my experiences of waiting around I tell him I'm not interested. He then reminds me of the big favor he did for me by not charging me for the extra square footage (75sq ft) that they covered because of their miscalculation. To me it felt as if he was throwing that in my face. I ended up paying full price for installation even after the excuses, mix ups, late arrival, and unfinished job. I'm disappointed with this experience and will not be working with this company in the future. From reading the other reviews it is clear that they use the traffic excuse often. I hope this review saves others from enduring the same headache."

FAQs for carpet installation projects in Elkton, VA

Carpet rolls come in standard widths of 12 and 15 feet. Less commonly, you might find a roll 13.5 feet wide. There are no standard roll lengths, but they’ll have enough to cover almost any home.

You’ll need equal amounts of carpet padding and carpet. Carpet padding costs $200 to $500 for the average room. However, the padding is trimmed a couple of inches away from the wall on all sides to make room for tack strips. Most residential installs have padding, and professionals include this in their bids.

Often, the best carpet for basements doesn’t include a pad. You’ll find this mainly in humid areas or places with a high-water table.

One linear foot of carpet or other material is simply one foot measured in a straight line. You typically aren’t going to measure carpet this way. It’s quoted in square feet or square yards.

There are nine square feet in one square yard of carpet.

The amount of carpet you need to cover two rooms varies depending on the room size and configuration. Measure the floor space. Multiply width times length. Do this for both rooms and add the numbers together.

You’ll need between 80 and 110 square feet for 13 stairs. For unique stairwells, you might need more.

Measure indoor/outdoor carpet like you would any other area, taking the width times the length. For patios, make sure to add a couple extra inches to wrap around the edges. Indoor-outdoor carpets cost an average of $3.50 per square foot.

You’ll need enough carpet to cover the entire area of damage to avoid seams. For example, if you have a 4-inch tear in the middle of a hallway, you’ll want enough carpet to stretch from door to door or the next available seam. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you might be able to get a professional to do an invisible seam repair.

One square foot of carpet is one foot long by one foot wide.
