"Eric and his crew tackled a long-standing drainage problem in the basement of our 1932 Craftsman bungalow. We'd had several estimates and options but They impressed us from the start with their solution to the problem and their professionalism. They were great communicators and kept us apprised of what they were doing every step of the way. Can't recommend them enough."

"When I bought my old house in Raleigh, the basement leaked terribly every time it rained. Keith and his crew installed a full drainage system and sump. The job was not small and they had to work around all of my unpacked boxes. All of my questions were promptly answered. They did a great job and left the job site clean. After two hurricanes and lots of rain this fall, the basement has not leaked a single drop. Keith was also the best price by far and very knowledgeable. Thank you!!!!"

"The communication with Island Plumbing was great - which is half the battle when it comes to hiring contractors in our area. I called, they call back. It was amazing. My overall experience was fair. I asked for a quote on two different occasions prior to the job began. I never received that quote and had a bit of sticker shock when the invoice arrived. Also, it seemed as if the job took quite longer than it should have; possibly because of the two men, only one was experienced enough to do any actual work - the second, was primarily a tool provider (both extremely nice and respectful). The walls were to the studs and for the most part, the plumbing was easily accessible. A few of my instructions for the plumbers were not complete to my specifications - I blame that on not actually taking notes when surveying the job. i.e., I asked the plumber to sub the toilet plumbing above the floor so I can lay the flooring and place the flange in the appropriate space. Instead, I received a new flange with the existing plumbing well short of being flush with the subfloor. When I called to question this, I was told that "risers" would help with that problem. Maybe so, but not what was preferred by the customer. Also, the plumbers had to return to the job site in order to fix a small discrepancy but were prompt and easy to work with regarding the issue. The job went incomplete before sending an invoice. The plumbers were supposed to come back to hook up the faucet, toilet, shower accessories, etc...but after receiving the invoice half way through - I got the point and will finish the job myself."

"It worked out great. They actually came and did the work. I had to pay extra for the dryer vent cleaning because, the big deal didn't cover it. Angie's List needs to be more specific on the deal, because a first time home owner like me can get confused. He explained that it needed to be done. I thought it was for the dryer and it worked out in the end and I was happy. They showed it to me and told me that it could cause a fire. I was happy that he educated me on that. They were accurate, knowledgeable, and the guy that came out, his father had built my house. The pricing was good."

"Simply Awesome! Paul and the team at Mooch’s did a fantastic job installing gutters on our house. One of the gutters was three stories high and it was not problem (other companies wouldn’t take the job because of this). Timely, great price and super workmanship. I highly recommend them."

"The company came right out and gave us an assessment. We hired them to do the treatment, but since there were two types of treatment it took two crews. The first crew installed the baits on time, but I had to call the second crew and remind them that they still needed to come. It was ok, but I now feel that I will have to keep up with them to do follow up inspections instead of being able to rely on them."

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Emerald Isle, NC

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
