"After heavy rain we had Groundworks mitigate water in our basement. They drafted a plan and advised on how to prevent water intruding on the east wall of our house, which consisted of a front and back bedroom. The water was currently only entering from the back bedroom, so Groundworks advised to put in an interior french drain and waterproofing. My wife and I specifically asked whether we should also mitigate the front bedroom, and they advised against because it would entail losing the bedroom closets, and the existing plan would mitigate water for the entire side of the house. We also specifically asked if we had water intrusion later in the front bedroom if it would be covered under the warranty and they confirmed that it would be covered. Now less than 2 years later, I have water in my front basement bedroom every time it rains. I have contacted the company repeatedly, and while they initially, verbally stated that they would correct the work and make things right, they have"

""You didn't pay the second half did you?" has been The first question of every person who has come to look at the fence. Cosmetically the fence is ugly up close. If you look at the details things aren't right, and the fence isn't even straight along the back of the yard. We contacted Coil N Soil with pictures of the slats coming away from the fence and a video of the gate not closing. We contacted him once more about the fence being nailed to the house. We had already paid in full and it didn't seem like he cared about fixing the problems because in his words, "It doesn't matter." The yard is in a sorry state and needs a lot of work, but hiring Coil N Soil for a fence replacement did nothing to improve it. Various chunks of concrete were left on the ground from the old fence posts holes. Empty water bottles and pieces of the old fence that hadn't been cleaned up. Other random debris like old roots, bricks, gravel, and loose rock from the fence line thrown haplessly into the lawn and left there. They were asked multiple times to use a trashcan for their cigarettes, but we've found cigarette butts all over the ground all around the house. We didn't expect free labor to clean up the yard, but we did expect them to clean up the new garbage the work created. We've spent hours fixing up things that would have taken a few extra seconds to do right during installation of the fence. One day after the fence was installed a short sprinkle of light rain meant the gate would no longer close and the latch fell apart and we had to put it back on. We had to cut back the poorly framed gate so it could close, but we can't fix the ugly gouges he left on the fence instead of cutting the gate to the correct size in the first place. Five days later and we're noticing not all the slats are nailed on the top and bottom and are coming off the fence. Nine days in we notice some of the slats are nailed in the wrong places so some nails are just sticking out the other side of the fence into dead air. One was hammered over to try and keep it capive in the fence. The fence slats are not evenly spaced and some are so tight they look like they're already bulging off the fence after it rains. Since we did the walk of the property in the dusk we missed that the slats were so unevenly spaced, the terribly framed gates, and another very important problem. Rather than replacing one of the fence posts that was next to the house he nailed the fence into the house. I am worried he has damaged the siding of my home. Thahn / Rich insists that's the way it was before, but you can clearly see the old post hole still in the ground. When I pointed this out it was met with another, "It's fine, it doesn't matter, we do it this way all the time" Despite all the other problems replacing the post and caulking the holes he put into the siding were the only thing we insisted that he should come fix. This request was met with yet another, "Come on, it doesn't matter, it's fine" He told us we needed to replace a retaining wall at the back of the yard to keep back erosion and soil from the bottom sides. He warned about moisture and eventual rotting of the fence from soil being trapped against it. The retaining wall did need to be replaced, but he built it right up against the fences on the sides of the yard. Now I feel like the retaining wall is creating the exact problem it's supposed to prevent. The edges of the wall are nearly touching the sides of the fence and the back fill of soil was covering the bottom of the fences on the side of it up to a 8-16 inches on one side. I had to dig back the soil off the side fences and remove more from the front side of the retaining wall since soil was also 4-10 inches above the bottom of the fence in some places."

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.
Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.
A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.
Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.
Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.
Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
