"The cabinets and countertops are beautiful and match sample materials perfectly. Dave Warren and whole team were great. Dave did a great job helping me with the cabinet design, making sure measurements were accurate, and creatively dealing with some existing kitchen layout challenges. I highly recommend him and Kitchen Concepts!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"From start to finish Rob was very responsive and punctual. He was consistently on time and if he was running late he would call and let me know. Example: He called to let me me know that he would be 15 minutes late and this happened maybe 2 times. He always kept me informed and educated about the process. I always knew what was happening and when it would happen. Rob is an excellent craftsman. He is very skilled and has high standards. He does not suffer fools, in other words, he expects high standards in others. His history includes master shipbuilder of yachts and sailboats. He is a verbal guy, educated and has traveled the world with wonderful stories. I am extremely pleased with my new elegant bathroom. Since my circa 1927 bathroom had basically never been remodeled, there were a few surprises along the way. Rob did not think the lath and plaster need to be completely removed and afterwards wished that he had included that in his original bid. When he went to install the ceiling fan vent, he encountered a solid wood block between the ceiling joists. This required a great deal of effort to remove and a partial removal of the lath and plaster ceiling. He was able to seamlessly patch the ceiling with sheet rock, not an easy task. There were several adjustments and changes along the way. Rob always listened to my ideas. If he wasn't sure it could work, he would think about it rather than just say no it can't be done. Most of the time he made it work. His finished work was the best. The original woodwork on the cabinets that were not removed look new. The plumbing and tile work were subcontracted. They were both excellent and I am extremely pleased with their work. It is clear that Rob has used them almost exclusively and knows their work is up to his high standards. Rob does have a counter top provider but I was very particular about the look I wanted for my counter tops. In the end I used a provider that had the marble look in quartz that I loved in stock. It was a new design, so of course it was more expensive. I also found my own shower glass installer and Rob liked them so much he plans to use them in the future. Rob is a happy guy with a strong personality. He has a strong work ethic and gets the job done. His wife helps him out as a go-fer and even a heavy lifter. They work as a team. I would definitely use Rob in the future."

"First of all let me say…Job well done! We absolutely love the finished product. Kristi’s ability to perfectly capture our vision was delightful. Dillon and David really brought the vision to life. My wife and I cannot say enough good things IYH. Every member of the team has just been so super responsive and timely every step of this process. Specifically, we have had remodels where the contractors and subcontractors would only respond to me and leave my wife out of the loop or be unresponsive. Not at all IYH's approach. This was literally the best remodel experience we have ever had. We will absolutely work with them again."

"We had a good experience with Alex Freddi a few years ago for a bathroom remodel, so we hired him again for our recent kitchen remodel. Project manager Gary had every subcontractor scheduled perfectly, everyone did a wonderful job, the jobsite was kept clean and we are very happy with the results. We would definitely recommend this company."

"I have used this service twice, first to work on finishing the basement in my 1930 house. They did a fabulous job of transforming a drab, cold space into an inviting area. They did everything from giving me a much needed linen c!oset, removing cheap and dated paneling and adding texture and paint to the walls, and turning a dark and scary stairway into a bright and beautiful passage. I rehired them last year to work on my dark and dingy kitchen. It is now a beautiful, world class kitchen. They took out the old false ceiling and now I have beautiful high ceilings. They cabinets were old and varnished but serviceable. I didn't want to destroy them, so Lo's stripped off the old varnish and painstakingly painted them. While they stayed very c!ose to my original plan, they offered advice that helped being the whole kitchen together. My once sad little kitchen is now one of my favorite rooms in the house. I had an old pipe burst earlier this month, causing damage to my beautiful basement. I am in the process of hiring Lo's for the third time. Take a look at the before and after pictures of the kitchen! Thank you Amadou!"

"We had Southerland Plumbing install all of our kitchen appliances, fridge, range, over the range microwave, sink as well as our bathroom vanity, and faucets. They were quick to find effective solutions to make the appliances that we got work for our home. And everything looks and works flawless and for an unbeatable price. We will definitely be calling Roy and his team for any future remodeling work we need."

"These folks were wonderful! They helped us do renovations on a 100 yr old house starting with restoration of a previously flooded finished basement. They did a fantastic kitchen remodel with new cabinets, counters, and tile. They helped us get a landscaping master plan and then we used them to do the hardscape including a beautiful 18 X 18 paver patio. I liked the way they do things right, and gave me advice along the way that I could trust."

Small jobs welcome

"This is the second project that we have hired JAW Construction for and we are very happy with how our remodel turned out. As this was a major kitchen, dining and living room remodel, which meant we were not going to be able to be in those rooms during the construction, John and I worked on the timeline to ensure it went as smoothly as possible. Before the project started, Mark from Amcraft Cabinets came out and measured and talked with us to determine how best to use the space. We came up with several cool options including a pull out spice rack and a lift for my mixer. Once the project began, John, Brian, the electricians Clint, Christian and Tyler and the plumber Mike were always on time, friendly, always available for questions and cleaned up after themselves. John estimated that the project would take six weeks and it ended up taking five weeks! While it was not fun to be without a kitchen, we are so happy with how it turned out, it made it all worth it. Everyone that has seen our remodeled areas or pictures of them are very impressed. I highly recommend hiring JAW Construction and we are already planning our next project with John."

FAQs for kitchen remodel projects in Portland, OR

Your galley kitchen needs adequate clearance around any island installation to maintain functionality. Most galley kitchens lack sufficient width for traditional islands, as these layouts prioritize efficiency in smaller spaces.

If your kitchen has an unusual width, consult with a kitchen designer who can evaluate your specific dimensions and recommend appropriate solutions. For narrower spaces, consider alternatives like rolling carts or narrow work tables that provide additional surface area without permanently restricting movement.

Kitchen remodels require six to 10 weeks for completion, though timelines vary based on project scope and material availability. Simple updates like cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement might finish within a few weeks, while comprehensive renovations involving structural changes often extend beyond two months.

Planning stages add approximately four weeks before construction begins. Maintaining clear communication with your contractor and ordering materials early helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Common errors include insufficient clearance between opposing countertops, inadequate lighting that creates shadowy work areas, and poor storage planning that leaves countertops cluttered. Some homeowners select oversized appliances that overwhelm the space or invest in expensive features that don't address fundamental workflow issues.

Careful planning, accurate measurements, and consultation with experienced professionals help avoid these pitfalls and ensure your renovation successfully addresses your kitchen's specific challenges.

Whether expansion makes sense depends on your home's layout, your budget, and your long-term plans. Combining a galley kitchen with neighboring spaces creates more open, flexible layouts that many buyers prefer. However, removing walls involves substantial costs, particularly if they contain plumbing, electrical systems, or structural elements.

Sometimes, optimizing your existing galley layout through better storage solutions and lighting proves more cost-effective than expansion. Consult with a contractor to evaluate specific costs for your situation.

Effective galley kitchen lighting combines multiple sources to eliminate shadows and create visual spaciousness. Overhead fixtures provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates work surfaces directly. Consider recessed ceiling fixtures that don't protrude into limited headspace.

Lighting with dimming capabilities allows adjustment for different activities. Reflective surfaces like glass tile backsplashes or glossy cabinet finishes help bounce light throughout the space, reducing the corridor effect common in galley layouts.
