"The crew was very professional and did the work quickly. Nolan did a great job explaining the process to us and made us feel very comfortable in navigating the roof replacement. We had a lot of fun with him and the roof was installed quickly and in a timely fashion."

"Western Pa. slate arrived and offered to assist, on the spot, with my problem. This was enormously helpful, as the roof had been leaking and more bad weather is forecast, and winter is around the corner. I was very pleased with this, and would be quite comfortable hiring them for a larger job. I would give them an A+, if possible!"

"Simply put, Bob (the owner) and his crew were awesome in every measurable way. They score a 100 points on a 10-point scale as far as we are concerned. To begin with, Bob responded to my voice-message within an hour or so...he visited the project location the next day, and provided his written quote within 2 business days. Bob also maintained communication during the period from my initial call to the morning that the work began. Based on DELL'AQUILA PLASTERING's current workload at the time, a tentative date less than 2 weeks out was agreed upon, subject to us completing other work (wiring, plumbing, etc). Bob maintained excellent communication, and called to confirm the start date and arrival time. Bob and his team arrived at 8:30am as promised. Once the drop-cloths were installed from the entrance to the bathroom by the workers, there was a continuous flow as the work moved right along. The project was completed on time and under the budgeted estimate (WOW!). Cleanup was exceptional, as there was nothing that would indicate that a sheet-rock and plaster project had just been completed. Combine all that I have said above, with the friendliness and professionalism of Bob and his Team, and the timeliness and quality of the work completed, and you have a FIVE-STAR COMPANY ready to complete your project!"

"Everything went great from initial estimate through cleanup! This company was referred to me by a friend whose metal roof they had installed. Everything they did was professional, courteous & on time from beginning to end. The estimate was honest, accommodating and low pressure, the office was friendly, the workers were prompt & worked hard. Everyone was super easy to work with. Plus they did the work that some others weren’t interested in looking at bc it is a shared garage."

"I called Ultimate Custom Painting and left a message. I was called back very quickly and was told that he works with a plaster guy who sets his own schedule. I was given his contact info. I called the number I was given but a recording came on that said the number was not in service. So I contacted the owner of UCP to make sure I had the right number and was informed (somewhat rudely) that it was the right number because he had just called and talked to him. I tried calling again with the same result. Finally, Jim (UCP's plaster guy) called me and set up a time to meet. He arrived on time and was professional during the estimate.  After giving his price, he seemed a bit pushy about setting up a time to perform the work. Had we been the least bit defensive about needing time to think about the decision, I'm sure he would have been fine.
It turns out that not only does UCP use a "plaster guy". they use a plaster subcontractor because Jim runs his own remodeling/renovation business - plastering is just one of his services.
We originally agreed that he would start on Tuesday, but he did not show up until 9:45 to tell me that he could not start until Thusday because a previous customer asked him to do the electrical work on his job.  It would have been nice to receive a phone call, perhaps the night before?, to let me know he would not be coming, rather than showing up at 9:45.  (Being a grad student, I can easily set my own schedule so working from home is not a big deal, but if I would have wasted vacation time on that day, I would have been mad.)
Jim and his son showed up on Thursday around 9:30 - much later than I was expecting them, but in his defense, we never actually set a time that I should expect him - that's my own fault. I worked from home that day and was surprised to see them leave approximate at 3:30. On the second day, they showed up about the same time, but stayed much later than the previous day. He asked if he could finish on Saturday, which was nice to have the project completed, rather than needing to stay home another day during the week.
Throughout the project, we did ask him to maybe patch a few more areas than we originally discussed, and he did a good job at keeping track of them all. But I did need to remind him of a few areas that needed to be fixed. When he was leaving on Saturday afternoon, I found a spot that we had discussed several times (from the beginning) but was overlooked. It's typically hidden by the window curtains, so it's understandable that it would be missed. When I mentioned it, he quickly put plaster on it and made an attempt at getting the texture to blend with the rest of the wall. It seemed pretty rushed and does not match as well as some of the others. I think once it's painted though, it will be hard to see.
Jim did a good job keeping the majority of the dust down and cleaning after himself as he went along. With any job where you are sanding plaster and joint compound you are going to create lots of dust. We had to do a pretty thorough cleaning of the house on Sunday, but it wasn't any worse than any other deep cleanings your house probably needs once or twice a year.
Overall, a very good experience with them.  We are very satisfied with the work they performed and quality, especially at the price we paid. This was our third estimate, which matched the estimate of the second contractor. The first was very high.

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Greensburg, PA

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
