"Awesome. Joe and his team are wonderful to work with. I've never seen contractors so dedicated to getting things right, ensuring your satisfaction and giving 100% every day. Joe's team showed up on time (a few minutes early) every day for a week. They worked extremely hard at least 8 hours every day, were meticulous with their work and went above and beyond. We found a lot of issues under our vinyl, windows with no backer board, missing tyvek in a lot of places, no caulk around windows, we had mold, rotten and very wet boards (headers, plywood etc.), mold going to the drywall in spots and all sorts of issues. The guys replaced and repaired every issue and only went a day and a half over schedule considering all of the additional repairs they discovered and had to account for. Joe's pricing is great for the service they provide, his guys are wonderful, experienced and trustworthy, as is Joe."

"Randall and Aimee were great to work with, and their crew did an outstanding job on two fronts.  I first had them replace and repair a roof for a small rental house that we own in Mobile.  The tenant had complained of leaking during the heavy rains we had in May, 2014.  They were prompt to respond to my request for a quote, and originally gave a time estimate of 10 days to two weeks to start, since the recent weather (and positive Angie's List recommendations) had given them plenty of recent business.  A few days later, I got a call from Aimee, "pick a color - we're going to do your job tomorrow, and we're picking up materials today!" Since mine was a "small" job - the house is <800 sq. feet - they picked it up "between jobs".  Their crew uncovered some major rot in the old roof, but repaired it better than new and finished the job early in the same afternoon! <br /> We were so impressed with the work, we had them give me a quote on our residence in Foley.  The roof was overdue for replacement, and there was some rot in some of the fascia and eaves.  They bid the roof and fascia repair for a very reasonable amount, and work began promptly within about 10 days - still under their "two week" estimate.  They had stated that the job would take "about two and a half days", but by the end of the first day when I looked at the house with all of the fascia pulled off and the roof stripped, I though "no way are they going to get done on time!"  I was wrong - they were done exactly as soon as Randall said they would be.  The repairs were swift, complete, and fully up-to-code requirements for Baldwin County.  Best of all, it looks FANTASTIC!  Their crew was thorough, professional, courteous, and took care to inconvenience us as little as possible. <br /> THANK YOU, Randall and Aimee!  It was a pleasure doing business with you. <br />"

"I did not have a very good experience with Jones home improvements. Ryan was never on time, he did not keep in contact with me to let me know when he was coming back to finish the job he started, he did a small plumbing job for me that was good but, he came back to repair the floor and replace it and it took more hours that he quoted it would take. He had to return to finish the job because he forgot to pick up finish molding. I had to call him to get a date locked in for him to complete the job. He is a nice enough guy, but really is not a professional carpenter and does not possess finish carpentry skills. I do feel I was overcharged because of his lack of knowledge and his inability to complete the job in a timely manner. I would not recommend him to anyone."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Gulf Shores, AL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
