I was advised to use glass break alarms within 10 ft of my first floor windows, which we installed correctly. I asked prior to installation if having one in the kitchen would cause false alarms due to dishes clanging, etc. I was told the glass break alarms are configured to a precise frequency that alarms with breaking glass. So, not a "no", but not really an answer. Well, every time we cook dinner, wash dishes or empty the dish washer, the kitchen glass break alarm gives a warning which would sound the alarm if it was set. This has caused us a number of false alarms while we've been away due to shifting bowls or plates in our drying rack. For the first several we've had to pay our police department $120 to check the house, and I was only notified after the first alarm that there was a cheaper option for a security company to drive by to check for a break in."

"During the recent ice storm in Cincinnati, my only back door key broke off in the lock. Because of the row houses on Liberty Hill, a blocked back door meant that I had to climb more than 20 icy steps to use my front door. Naturally I wanted to get this problem fixed as quickly as possible.   Rich at AB Bonded Locksmiths suggested that I try to remove the key fragment from the lock.  As an alternative, he described how to remove the lock en bloc so that he could extract the key in the store.  The last option was to replace both locks on the back door (both opened with the same key) at a cost of more than $100. By following RIch's instructions I was able to remove the key fragment, and RIch made 3 new keys in the store. Total cost was $6.28. Had Rich not taken the time to discuss the problem, I would have spent more than $100 and lost work time for an unnecessary repair. AB Bonded Locksmiths definitely deserves their high rating on Angie's list.

I've had a couple different systems in my homes over the years which were "professionally" installed; one was wired the other wireless. I install this myself with the help of tech support, I'm 65years old in good health but of course not as agile as I was a few years ago, but this system was a piece of cake for me to install. I responded to an ad for a $99 ADT alarm installation and ended up buying a $1900 system. My monthly monitoring fee doubled to $56 a month. It does include smoke and fire monitoring which the previous system didn't. System was installed on time. But I now have a re-occurring fault with the front door sensor. This coming Thursday will be the 5th time Protect Your Home will be attempting to fix the same problem. I called ADT to get a billing adjustment, and they told me I have to call back after the service call to request an adjustment. Strange, but even I (at 70-years old) can get to the alarm history and see the number of faults that have occurred over the past 8-10 weeks.

After foolishly signing a 2-year contract, I found all of the alarm equipment could be purchased at Radio Shack for 1/3 to 1/2 the price ADT charges. It appears the alarm companies are primarily interested in selling alarm systems and monitoring contracts; all of the actual monitoring is done by computer.

The service calls are easy to make and the response time is pretty good, but I'm tired of getting service for the same problem with no relief from ADT.

My advice is to shop around for alarm systems, especially for the monitoring contracts. Beware of the fine print that automatically renews your contract unless you proactively cancel during the last month.
