"Consistent communication through the different phases of getting the roofing work done, from initial estimate appointment to final inspection with the Supervisor, which was very nice. I didn't have to wait very long to get on their schedule and have the work completed. Looks great!"

"I received a very detailed quote very promptly from this contractor. He was responsive to questions. I live 2.5 hours from the home that this roof was replaced on, and MCR was flexible to accommodate my insecurities with not being onsite during the project. The roof was installed very quickly and looks beautiful. Additionally they cleaned up everything so nicely that you would never have known they were there. I would highly recommend MCR Roofing."

"Job was very well done. When the inspector came from the solar company to inspect the new roof, he found that some soft (cracked, not rotten) plywood had been shingled over. High Quality Roofing promptly returned and tore out the bad wood and re-shingled. They did a good job cleaning up and were polite and friendly. Price was very reasonable."

"While we were first dubious about having someone who came to our front door offering to do our roofing, we definitely were not disappointed. Anthony saw our job through from beginning to end. He worked closely with our insurance company and all work was done just as promised. We absolutely would recommend Frontline for your roof replacement and plan on calling them in the fall to do our exterior painting."

"We consulted James on our clay tile roof and two old skylights over our kitchen that were actively leaking during the heavy 2021 monsoon. I wish I had known of his business and expertise prior to getting the runaround for close to 2 years by another well-known local roofing company. The other company > orders for new skylights were placed twice, and then... nothing would happen despite our follow-ups to check progress. James assessed the skylights, ordered new ones, received the skylights quickly (custom made and shipped within 2 weeks), and promptly installed them. The new skylights are wonderful. He also made a separate trip to help us assess a leaking skylight in another room, and he repaired it on the spot. After the installation of the skylights, and as part of the roof assessment, his crew replaced about 30 clay tiles that were cracked/broken (some caused by a previous contractor who walked across the roof without respecting the fragility of clay tile - grrr!). We are selling this home and it's currently under contract. James made a special effort to help us resolve all issues prior to the upcoming close of escrow. I am grateful and will recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone needing a seasoned roofer with... experience, integrity, and a sincere desire to provide the best customer service."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Humboldt, AZ

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
