"If you have an emergency do not call this company. Contacted in September, consultant came first of Octoberand down payment for work was made. Mid- January and only half the job done. While Adao Natario was an excellent professional and did a great job sealing up the wall cracks in the basement,my disappointment with the Company in general is emense. Adao listened to my concerns and I’ll wait to see if the Company responds with appropriate work on the sump pump and discharge issue if they ever show up. Meanwhile, I am surrounded by water in the yard and just hope the sump pump in basement keeps working. Price below reflect only crack repair."

"7 new columns were installed including new footings. This is very physical labor and very taxing on the body: hammering old concrete, hand digging footings, properly installing new footings, this was a lot of dirt, rock and cement going in and out of the basement, yet the crew (Justin, Francisco, Brandon) always maintained a great attitude and worked continuously. The guys were very polite and professional. They were accommodating and answered all my questions. We ran into a few oddities and Justin was able to modify and resolve with a few phone calls to the engineers. We were able to raise the house up 1/4" to 5/8", before we stopped due to plaster starting to crack. We now feel comfortable continuing restoration of this wonderful 100 year old home, onto the next 100 years!!"

"The Stumpf Construction folks and their subcontractors did an absolutely outstanding job for us. When interviewing contractors and getting their ideas about how to resolve our problem, it became very clear to us that Chad Stumpf is truly an expert in determining how to fix drainage problems such as the one we were experiencing. He recommended, and his company installed, a new 4" thick $000 PSI driveway designed to take the flow of water away from our house. His company also waterproofed the garage floor/driveway joint and installed subsurface drainage tile under our driveway The water now flows --even in heavy rains--off our driveway and away from our house into a new small dry rock bed that Stumpf Construction installed after regrading an area to the side of our house. In addition to this work, and the re-coating of our garage floor, among other things, his company and subcontractors also installed paver stones in areas of our driveway which are prone to tree root growth, and in another area adjacent to our house, installed new downspouts, dug out and installed a new exit pipe for one downspout, removed the bottom row of siding on one section of our house, replaced it with a waterproof membrane and covered it with protective PVC board. We could not be more pleased with the quality of the design products and workmanship provided by Stumpf Construction and its subcontractors. We highly recommend this contractor to anyone who has basement water issues caused by drainage problems outside a house or building."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Iowa City, IA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
