"After having a problem with a "reputable" contracting company, TAP Construction came through and began our addition. Todd was very professional, as well as his staff/contractors-a welcome change. Immediately, we saw a difference in workmanship and ethics. We would recommend Todd for any project and would use again if needed."

"Brian and his crew were meticulous and the driveway looks great. My only comment is that at one point there was a slight lack of communication. But that did improve a lot at the end of the project. The cost always seems high no matter what you have done. It was slightly over the estimates given on the website, but not too far out of line."

"Blue Crab did a wonderful job redoing my bathroom. The workers were polite and cleaned up each day. The job took exactly the amount of time they estimate and they came back to finish the bathroom when my shower doors were damaged in transit. They made really suggestion for improvements . The bathroom is beautiful ."

"Great experience from start to finish. My appointment was with Carlos who also provided my quotation. Unlike his competitors he came prepared with material samples along with pictures of previous projects. It was clear Carlos had a background in structural engineering as he was able to answer all my questions pertaining to anything structural. I received my proposal the same day of my appointment which others took weeks. It included firm pricing for permits which others only provided a range of cost. The job was well managed with keeping their workers on task and managing material deliverers along with keeping me up to date on job statis. Their workers are true craftsmen as their attention to details clearly shows. My wife and I couldn’t be happier with the deck they constructed along with our experience with this company. "

"Where do I even start with Homecraft Builders?! They are AMAZING and I do not use that word lightly. From my first interaction with owner Marc, I knew I found the team to make our home renovation dreams a reality. Marc is kind, responsive, professional, and fair. Just when I thought I couldn’t be more impressed, I met the team. Rodney and Joe are true artists and take their work so seriously. Seeing our dream porch come to life day by day was such an exciting process. We loved seeing the builders come every day. The whole team is so kind, pleasant, extremely skilled, and excited about their work. They quickly became people we were so excited to see and talk to every morning. I cannot thank Homecraft builders enough for making our dreams a reality and for treating us like family the whole time. For any home projects, trust me, look no further than Homecraft. A huge thank you to Marc, Rodney, and Joe for everything they have done for us. We miss you guys already! "

"I think Terry Haggerty at Alston had a better concept for what I wanted my deck to be than I did. It came out just perfect and my wife and I could not be happier with the result. His crew showed up early and worked late. They were always professional and friendly. This was the biggest job I’ve ever contracted for and it’s great knowing that I picked the right pro to do the job. It’s a new house with s few projects to do and Alston will be the first pro I contact. I highly recommend Alston."

"Caleb of Rodgers Home Improvement built an additional full bathroom from the roughins in my home within one month. Caleb was professional, courteous, competent, and gave me a quote that did NOT gouge my budget. I had several quotes for this job but as soon as I met Caleb I knew his company was the one for my full Bathroom installation. I cannot praise Caleb enough! Rodgers Home Improvement will be my home improvement company for all my future home repair needs. Thank you Caleb from the bottom of my heart! Next Caleb will repair my egress window. Stay tuned for that review with pictures coming soon!"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Jarrettsville, MD

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
