Customers say: Quality work

"Project went very well and the team worked quickly. Everything that I wanted was accomplished. The only issue is a crack that has developed on the back patio. This is due to the existing patio being poured over and not cut out due to being monolithic with the house foundation. The difference is how the concrete was married together is the reason for the crack and not the fault of work. Reason for 4 star is some property was damaged by operator of a skid steer. Parts were paid for by contractor but operator could have been more careful to avoid the issue altogether. Highly recommend."

"After making several phone calls to get estimates on concrete work, we decided to go with Doug and his team at Affordable Concrete. During the survey of the work site he knew exactly what to do and said it would only be a few days to complete the work. Doug's team took 1 day to complete all prep work. (arrived at 8am and left at 6:30pm) After prep work we had to wait on the inspection to be completed by the county. After approval from county, Doug and his team came at 7:30 to start pouring the concrete. All concrete was completed within the day. He smoothed out slab while matching the expansion of driveway perfectly. Doug and his team cleaned up trash and moved all extra piles of dirt around the base of the slab. Doug did a great job and he even did work for some of our neighbors. If we ever need concrete work done again, Doug will be who we call. <br /> <br />"

"Kevin's team (3 workers) showed up on the scheduled day to begin the project.  Worked with the team on the first day to lay out the design and location of the firepit and seating walls and outside edges.  Once completed they began to excavate the patio area and lay stone and sand and level.  Approximately 8 yards of stone and 1 yard of sand were used for the base.  At the end of the second work day the paver base was completed and they started laying out the circular design for the firepit area.  The workers always showed up early in the morning and stayed till late afternoon and were very professional and easy to talk/work with.  If rain was in the forcast they would cover up the area that they were working till they could get back to us.  Within the next couple of work days the pavers were all down and cut, then they started working on the firepit and seating walls, which also took a couple of work days.  The end result is we have a beautiful paver patio with a stone faced firepit and two four foot stone faced seating walls around the firepit.  We are extremely pleased with our patio and the team at Palmetto Landscaping.  Dealing with Kevin and Pam, in the office, and the team onsite was always easy and everyone worked hard and did everything they could to answer our questions and make our experience with them completely satisfying.  The only small issue we had was getting the firepit grill and cover, which took longer than we expected but really no big deal.  We would not hesitate to go back to them in the future for any additional landscaping type work and would highly recommend them."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Johns Island, SC

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
