"Jack is the best.. he does great work. He is the only contractor that I trust to be in my home when we are not there. He's on time , trustworthy, not to mention his work is exceptional. My husband and I will not hire anyone else for any remodel in our home. The only minor problem I have is I have to wait because the man is in high demand. That's a good problem for him, but not for me. I will wait for him though.."

"Jay was incredibly professional, and he did an amazing job. Although the job took longer than he expected, he did things correctly and he took his time to do it right. He made sure I was happy with everything as he was doing it. Another thing I respected was that he was extremely clean when he was working - I never came home to a house that was destroyed; the floors were clean (even before the floors were redone), any tools were put away and not laying around, wherever he had tool boxes or tools, he protected the surface that it was on (be it old flooring or new counters). I enjoyed working with Jay, and I have hired him for another job already. I highly recommend using him for your next home remodel. He did exactly what he said he would do, and was willing to do extra items that came up (hooking up appliances, moving water lines) to make sure I was satisfied with the finished project."

"Andy performed quality work, was dependable, picked up his tools and debris prior to leaving for the day, and ensured that our expectations were met. He enlisted extra help in order to complete the job in a timely manner. Andy effectively communicated with us prior to beginning the job, as well as, throughout the process. We intend to continue hiring him for future projects."

"My wife and I wanted a deck for long time. I did a basic design of what we wanted then contacted different contractors for a quote. Various contractors we saw were fairly expensive and couldn't start the projects for weeks anyway. <br /> A friend of mine talked but this guy Scott he knew, who was starting a remodling, construction business. I called, left a message and he called me back in the evening. I showed my design, he made few suggestions to modify the initial design. Suggestions were actually really smart and made save lot of room compare to my initial plan. Price was really reasonable compare to quotes I had from other contractors. <br /> Following monday, he was at my house with one of his guys, with all tools and materials. Tuesday evening, the deck was done and the result was beyond my excpectations. The deck is really pretty, well build and sturdy. The house itself will probably go down before the deck. <br /> I know he had worked on other indoor and outdoor remodeling projects since. One of the bar at the HUB I think. <br /> I definitly recommend his services and will certainly call him back for my other personal projects. <br />"

"I CAN’T RECOMMEND RICK HALVORSON CONSTRUCTION ENOUGH!!!! IN A TIME WHEN IT IS INCREDIBLY HARD TO FIND AND TRUST A CONTRACTOR TO DO A JOB RIGHT, ON BUDGET, AND TO BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED THEM, RICK HALVORSON CONSTRUCTION IS THE ONLY ONE TO CALL!! Recently, my family and I decided to renovate our basement instead of moving to a new home. This is something we’ve never been a part of and were frankly pretty nervous about. After being in our home for 11 years, we’d built enough equity to get a loan, and remodel, but we had a very specific limit on how much we could spend. So when it came time to find a contractor we wanted to make sure we picked someone who was trustworthy first and foremost, reputable, and knowledgeable. We had worked with Rick before on some improvements to windows, doors, siding, etc, through the City of Fargo Renaissance program, and so naturally he was on our short list of contractors to obtain bids from. Rick’s bid was the best of the 3 that we received, and given our history with him and his business, we felt best going with him. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW GOOD THIS DECISION WAS! The work done by Rick’s crew, most notably Ryan Schuette, was so much better than we could have hoped it would be. Anytime a decision needed to be made on how to best do a particular job, it was always done the right way and not the cheapest way. There was never a concern about keeping it cheap, only doing what was best for the house, and for the client. And I can’t thank them enough. Add to them their subcontractors, JDP Electric, and Magnell Plumbing. Scott from JDP was awesome, and listened to all my request for power outlet positioning, light switches, smurf tube, data lines, phone lines, everything down to the color temperature in the ceiling lights, and he made sure it was done just right. Mike Magnell from Magnell plumbing went so far above and beyond that I don’t even know what to say. Example: he recognized the fact that at some point in the future we might get a fridge with water, and ice maker etc… and noticed that once the bathroom ceiling was in we’d never get a water line in, so he just ran a water line, even though it wasn’t part of the bid, and that’s just one of the many extra value’s he provided. Rick and his team of workers, and subs are thoughtful, courteous, thorough, accurate, and precise with the work they do. Their is no notch higher than them, they are THE TOP NOTCH when it comes to this work! DO NOT hesitate to call them!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Kindred, ND

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
