They attempted to perform the lowest-cost repair first (snaking a new line through the existing pipe); when that failed, they dug out a new line and installed PEX from the meter. The folks I worked with were professional and very good about keeping me in the loop about their work status. At all steps of the way, I felt like they were doing their best to do things the right way rather than the quickest; they took additional steps such as making sure the PEX mating to the house occurred inside (i.e., where it was accessible) and installed a new ball valve, which would save us considerably in the future if we had a failure again. Working with them, I had confidence that they were doing their best to do this repair in the least expensive way possible; it was only when circumstances proved prohibitive that they moved to the more expensive option (running the new line).
