"Even though Mikes bid was the highest one I received, I decided to go with him because I wanted a good deck and he appeared to offer the best solution. I signed the contract in July 2022 and he finally showed up to start my deck in May 2023. Admittedly, part of the delay was a pretty tough winter. The crew he hired to build my deck damaged some of the ceramic tiles on an adjoining concrete deck while they were tearing out my old, existing redwood deck. I pointed that out to Mike at the end of the project, but he refused to accept responsibility for it, so I had to hire a tile contractor to repair the damages. Mikes crew also removed the old deck, as the contract required, but they left a lot of the small bits and pieces, old nails, and screws from the demolition scattered around my yard for me to clean up after they left. The actual build of the new deck was pretty much as I expected, but there was some sloppy and poor workmanship in several areas. For example, the spacing between the Trex decking ranged from zero space to nearly a full inch between the Trex boards. Not consistent at all. Also, the structural boards holding the top of the stairway to the deck looked like they just grabbed them out of their scrap pile and screwed them on. The lengths were not equal, the end cuts were not straight, and one of them had a notch cut off the corner. When Mike was walking through doing the final inspection with me, he noticed and pointed out to me, that his crew had installed the stairway facia incorrectly. He assured me that he would have them return that afternoon or the following morning to correct it. Because he had always been so charming and quick to respond when I had a question -- except about the tile they damaged -- I believed him and gave him a check for the full and final payment. That was the last time I saw him or his crew. I tried contacting him several times, but he quit responding to me. Now I call it my 20/20 deck. It cost me well over $20,000 and it looks fine from over 20 feet away. I should have known better than to pay for something that was not fully satisfactory, but Mike comes across as so honest."
