"Great, we have no complaints... we would definitely recommend the company to our family and friends. When telling people we were getting our basement waterproofed and people were asking who was doing the basement... we heard nothing but good things about Complete Basement Systems!"

"I researched basement waterproofing solutions and was considering doing it myself. Then I found Safe Basements and read the literature about their product/process. To me, it seemed better than other similar products. I was surprised that they cover my place -- 2 hours into Wisconsin, or 3 hours from Litchfield. Brad came out to inspect the problems in my basement -- horizontal cracking, bowing, and water intrusion. He was able to explain the causes of those problems as well as others that I hadn't noticed. We agreed to pay for anchors to stabilize one wall that was bowing, and install drain tile and a sump pump. I'll be honest, I didn't shop around. I have no idea what other companies are charging for the same services. I normally get 3 or 4 bids or other opinions. I felt comfortable with the amount of research that I'd done, the knowledge Brad seemed to have, and the information about the products that I decided to hire Safe Basements without talking to other companies. I don't regret that decision. The wall anchor/stabilization crew called me before leaving Litchfield. Their ETA was pretty close to the actual time of arrival. When they arrived, we discussed the work being done. They did the work. They cleaned up. They gave me information about the anchor system and what I needed to do to correct the bowing and cracks. Everything was done as expected. The drain tile/sump crew was stuck at a previous job. They called me the day before (Tuesday) my job was expected to start to let me know there would be a delay starting my job. He then called in the middle of the start day (Wednesday) to let me know, they wouldn't be to my house until the next day. I was expecting a call between 7 and 8 on Thursday to let me know they were leaving Litchfield. Instead, I got a call at about 7:15 to let me know they were 15 minutes from my house. When they arrived, we talked about the work to be done, they cocooned my stuff in plastic, and they went to work. I think they worked until about 7 that day. They returned on Friday at about 8:30, having stopped to dump my concrete and dirt and to pick up gravel and concrete. They worked until about 10:30pm on Friday. I appreciated that they finished on Friday even though it was later than I expected. They cleaned up everything thoroughly, and walked me through the details of the sump pump and battery backup systems. Even though they'd driven a long distance, worked two very long days, and it was very late Friday, I didn't feel they rushed through. The job was complete. I think they would have stayed later if I'd had anymore questions. Unfortunately, one of the workers left his very nice tape measure, and I have not been able to get it back to him."

"My first experience with Hamlen Home improvement was when I was getting quotes to build a new cedar deck (over 10 feet off the ground, so not an easy job). Of the 5 estimates I got for the job, I went with Hamlen Home Improvement because he was punctual, had great communication and was approachable during the estimate process, was enthusiastic about what he was going to create (passion for his trade), and his price was very competitive. <br /> <br /> Since that time I have hired Hamlen to complete a total of 4 major projects. The initial project of the deck was done on time, within budget, had a HIGH level of craftsmanship (it's beautiful!), and most importantly because there was ALWAYS constant communication throughout the project. Hamlen Home Improvement WILL involve you in the project as much as you desire, will check with every decision before a 'cut is made', and will make sure you know of any necessary changes or obstacles (that come up any time you deal with construction/remodeling). He truly wants you to be happy with the end result, and takes a lot of pride in the work he does. <br /> <br /> I have had Hamlen Home Improvement complete the following projects on my house/property due to my high satisfaction, and I have been nothing but impressed and satisfied with each project: <br /> -Cedar Deck <br /> -6' Custom Wood Fence (I designed what I wanted, and he built it from scratch!) <br /> -Retaining wall <br /> -Installation of Drainage Tile <br /> -Complete basement finishing: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room, hallway and storage area. <br /> <br /> I will touch on the basement finishing, as this was by far the biggest and most impressive work he did for me. Hamlen Home Improvement handled every aspect of this project, and even though he hired other professionals that were experts of specific areas (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fireplace and stone mason), he was ALWAYS the one that dealt with them and held them to the same high standard of work that he holds himself to. I did not have to stress or worry about the subcontractors, because Hamlen knew his subs well, and was always keeping the communication lines open with me regarding scheduling, foreseeable issues, and general confirmation of design/construction choices. I was never worried about how something would turn out, because a conversation always took place to make sure we were on the same page. The final basement was extremely high quality, everything from wood floors to custom shelving to the inside of closets....It was ALL high quality and great looking! <br /> <br /> Every project I have done through Hamlen Home Improvement was done on time, cost came in very close to the estimate (and any changes I was well aware of prior to receiving the final bill), and I was left extremely satisfied. I believe that I have continued to return to Hamlen shows that more than I can say. I have also recommended Hamlen Home Improvement to numerous friends, family and neighbors, and I have heard the same positive response from them. <br /> <br /> One final testament to the quality of work: We put our house on the market (the one where all of the Hamlen Home Improvement work was done), and sold the house in under 3 months. In our price range there was over 80 homes for sale for a similar price, and of course the housing market is still down. The fact that we sold our house so quickly, and for FULL listing price, is definitely due to the work Hamlen Home Improvement put into it. We look forward to using them in the future on our new house! <br /> <br />"

"Great! Every time we've had dealings with Justin (Liebenow, the owner) and his employees, we've been impressed. FInances have been tight for us, so he was willing to try a fix with the beaver system we already had, gave us recommendations for when we were ready to move forward with something else, was knowledgeable about the changes in codes that would affect us, etc. <br /> He's been very responsive considering how overwhelmed his business has been this year with all of the excess water we've had in Rochester and was very kind when I called him out after the install to check and tweak a couple of things that weren't related to what had been done by them. I just can't say enough good about this company, and we have no affiliation with them besides being satisfied customers. It's so nice to have a dry basement again! <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Mantorville, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
