"Elderly Abuse …. Run I woke up to a leak in my front yard as I headed out of town. My wife called Roto Rooter as she left for work to come give us a quote. They said they only needed someone there to greet them when they arrived. So we had my 85 year old, legally blind, suffering from dementia mother, who lives next door, meet them outside so they could begin with their estimate. They never called us for a quote. Instead he replaced one section of pipe (which was only 4 ft. long), and a shut off valve (which he said was broken but was not) and charged a whopping $6,500. He walked next door and demanded payment from my blind mother. NO APPROVAL WAS GIVEN!!!! NO PHONE CALL WAS MADE!!! My mother, who isn’t mentally with us anymore, gave them her credit card and boom…… $6,500. We didn’t get a new water heater or a new sprinkler system. We got one 4 ft. section of pipe for $6,500 and a shiny new on/off valve which was not needed. That guy new what he was doing. He didn’t call us for a reason. He took one look at my blind old mom with dementia and charged whatever he wanted. He left us an arbitrary bill I could hardly read with little to no specifics. I have attached…. When I called the manager he did return half of the amount. It sounded like we were making progress. I still asked for an itemized receipt so I could see how 4 ft. of pipe and a valve would cost $3,250. If I stayed in town this repair would have cost me a total of $75 dollars in materials. He said he would get that itemized receipt and then has ghosted me ever since. I have reached out on numerous occasions. This company did not have permission to do $6,500 or $3,250 worth of work on my property. They were called for an estimate and took advantage of my elderly, blind, dementia plagued mother to run up a huge bill that no one can explain. They demanded that my mother, who isn’t the homeowner, pay $6,500. My wife waited by her phone all day for an estimate that never came. This is morally and ethically appalling at every level. Just for reference, we had our foundation lifted for $9,000 last year. They dug under the house in several areas and lifted it. This guy wanted about the same for replacing a 4 ft. section of pipe. How is this real????"

"I got a couple bids to replace our 17 year old Trane AC systems. I decided to go with SOS Mechanical for a couple reasons. Tom, the sales rep, was great with his presentation and was also great at communicating throughout the whole process. The second reason was that Steve, the owner, came out to carefully look over our situation before they gave us a quote. We have a unique zoning issue and the last company did a pretty funky job addressing it. After the equipment was installed Steve came back out to test the new zoning system and his team spent an extra day tweaking it until Steve was satisfied. We appreciated their creativity in solving our zoning issue, and they did not charge us extra for their extra time and materials. I just wanted to say what a great experience we had with the SOS team. The attention to detail by every person (at one time they had 5 or 6 people here working) exceeded our expectations. And of course we love the new Trane (so quiet) equipment and digital Nexia Thermostats. Well done! We recommend SOS Mechanical to anyone who has AC needs!"

"There is a review here and in Google of Journey Remodeling describing how the customer, Robert Hites, had to terminate Michael Cottone, his son Blake Cottone, and Journey Remodeling for breach of contract, and now the customer is in a legal battle with Cottone/Journey. The review also describes Cottone/Journey's noncompliance with TX building code, bad quality, unprofessional conduct, etc. Cottone/Journey replied to the review in Google that they "are in the middle of a private arbitration where the truth will be determined." I suspect the truth lies with the customer because Cottone/Journey did the exact same terrible work on our property, and we also terminated him. We chose not to sue Cottone because he did not have insurance, he had no value in his few business assets, and we could not legally go after his personal assets. Subsequently, although our lawyer said we certainly would have won the case, it would have been like trying to get blood from a turnip."

FAQs for plumbing installation for a remodel or addition projects in Marble Falls, TX

Adding bathroom plumbing to a detached garage starts with the basic line installation cost of $900 to $1,300. On top of this base expense, you'll need to budget for each fixture. A toilet costs  $250 to $550, sinks cost $150 to $800, and a shower or bathtub costs $400 to $1,900. The project will also require ventilation, moisture-resistant materials, and possibly electrical work. Remember that these costs reflect only the plumbing aspects—additional construction, finishing, and permitting expenses will apply to complete a functional bathroom space.

While certain aspects of garage renovation might be suitable for DIY enthusiasts, plumbing installation requires professional expertise. Connecting to water and sewer systems demands specialized knowledge and equipment, and improper installation can result in severe water damage, code violations, and potential health hazards. Most municipalities require permits for plumbing modifications, and these often stipulate that licensed professionals must perform work. Consider limiting your involvement to simpler tasks like painting or basic finishing work.

The timeframe for adding plumbing to a detached garage spans one to three days for the actual plumbing work. However, this represents only the active installation period. The complete project timeline must account for planning, obtaining permits (which can take weeks depending on your locality), coordinating multiple contractors if needed, and addressing any unexpected challenges that arise during installation. Weather conditions can also impact excavation and outdoor connection work.

Adding plumbing to a detached garage will likely increase your property taxes. Tax assessors consider plumbing an improvement that enhances property value and functionality. The specific tax impact varies by location and project scope. Converting a garage into living space with plumbing facilities can trigger significant reassessment in many jurisdictions. Before proceeding with your project, consult your local tax assessor's office to understand the potential tax implications and factor this ongoing expense into your decision-making process.
