"The entire experience with Patrick Davidson and Apex Roofing was the best it could possibly have been. We were pleased with every interaction we had, whether by phone, e-mail, text or in person. Patrick's price was competitive, the quality of work outstanding and the conduct of his crew was commendable. A big shout-out to Sergio and Patrick's son (Jared?) who provided on-site leadership. Clean up was extraordinary as well. Also, Sergio had to come back to install some gable vents since there was a delay in the supply chain. "Where honesty and integrity is paramount" is their motto and they lived up to it. Go with this company, you'll be glad you did."

"I am really happy with the work Richards Roofing has done. Out of 7 quotes, Richards Roofing had the best price. The crew was professional and friendly. Besides the new roof which required a tear-off, I wanted attic insulation. I asked them to do the attic insulation by going through the roof, as to not track fiberglass through the house - no problem. They quoted 12" of blown-in fiberglass; the others quoted 8 to 10". They started within a week after I contracted them. Mine is a ranch of 2900 square feet, yet they did the work in 2 days including the tear-off, attic insulation and clean-up. They cleaned up well, and even put back my gutter leaf guards. They allotted 10 plywood sheets in the price quote. They used only 4, so they refunded the cost of the unused sheets, so I was charged less than the quote. In my experience when I have had a roof replaced, the chimney leaked during the first big rain. Here we've had several big rains, snow, sleet, and high winds in the year since they installed my roof and I have had no leaks or other problems. I've recommended Richards Roofing to my friends and co-workers and would definitely hire them again."

"My 1940's home has a flat roof over part of the first floor. This "feature" was apparently intended to provide a second-storey balcony, with access via a door from one of the upstairs bedrooms.  Needless to say, the builders who originally constructed all the homes in my neighborhood must not have been from Michigan.  In the 14 years I have lived in this house, we have replaced the flat roof no less than three times due to water leaks brought on by snow, ice, and typical Michigan weather.  After the latest leak, I decided to try and fix the situation once and for all by having an angled roof built up in place of the flat roof.
After searching for a contractor, I selected Montell Construction based on Angie's List recommendations.  After calling, I had a scheduled appointment with Chad McNew, one off the co-owners of Montell in fairly short order.  Chad was very easy to work with, straightforward, and very helpful.
In order to install the angled roof, we determined it would be necessary to remove the existing access door, building up the resulting hole with a stud wall and a window.  I also added a number of other items to the list of tasks as indicated above.
The biggest challenge with this project was that, as can be seen, it represented a number of semi-related tasks.  Some of these tasks were completely independent, such as the install of the  additional insulation.  The remainder of the tasks had to be timed sequentially, and this is where the project stretched out.  Because Montell relies on a number of different crews that each specialize in one area, those crews had to be scheduled separately, and, again, sequentially.  So when weather caused a delay, it caused a stackup of scheduling issues.  This situation was complicated by my family's vacation, work, and the need for some off the work to be done inside the house.  This scheduling issue, which was circumstantial and largely beyond Montell's ability to control, was the only source of anxiety over the course of the project.
Each of the crews that performed the work were professional, courteous, and more than helpful.  When there was an apparent mis-communication regarding the gutter routing, the team listened to my concern, worked with me, and made the desired adjustments.
While in a perfect world, the work would not have needed to stretch out as long as it did, I have been extremely satisfied with the work that was done.  Everything was done with high-quality materials and to a high standard of workmanship.  I would definitely use Montell again.

"Extreme Exteriors did a fantastic job from start to finish. I reached out to this company to get a quote for the repair / replacement of my mother roof. Shortly after reaching out I received a call back from Jacob who is a real pleasure to work with. Jacob setup a convenient day and time for us to meet to take a look at the roof. Jacob being the professional he is took pictures of the shingles lifting, missing and moss growing in the valleys to share with me. After Jacob performed his roof inspection we sat down to discuss the process, materials and pricing for the job. Extreme Exteriors was able to come in approximately $300 less then comparable competitors. For insurance reasons I had a very aggressive schedule and required the roof installed ASAP - Jacob was able to coordinate with his crews along with pulling all the necessary permits needed to perform the job in the time frame I required it. This company does not mess around - the day after the shingles were delivered a crew showed up early at the house. Extreme Exteriors got the work completed in about 5 hours keeping the work area clean and they performed a Magnet sweep to pickup any stray nails. This company did a complete tear-off, installed GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent System, Front and Back Edge Vents, installed new drip edge and 6' of ice & water shield. They also install new flashing around the chimney. I would definitely use this company again for any of my future roofing needs and would highly recommend them to my friends and family."

"The job went well.  Once into the tuck pointing part of the job, it was obvious that a lot of mortar behind the outside brick had eroded away.  Michael did a great job making sure the job was done correctly.  As for the roof, the fixes he did, addressed the problem of leaking at the flashing.

"My wife and I purchased 30 Sunrise vinyl windows and a sliding door from Kotch’s Windows-N-More and had them installed in Aug 2017. Our home was built in 1998 and the original wood windows were in need of replacement. Mike Kotch and his team were fantastic! Mike was very knowledgeable and professional and I was pleased that he did not use any high-pressure sales techniques during the bid process. His extensive experience in the windows industry was very evident during our consultation with him. We received 3 different quotes for windows and we found that Mike’s quote (which price-wise fell in the middle of the 3) provided the most value and allowed us to get exactly what we wanted (including a really neat Sunrise sliding glass door with shutters built on the inside of it, and 3 large picture windows that the other competitor said would need to be 6 smaller windows instead of 3). Mike’s installers were also top notch. We were very impressed with the work they did, and the care and attention to detail that they had. (Mike’s installers came highly recommended to us from a few different neighbors of ours, which is one of the main reasons we decided to go with Mike.) The installers consisted of a 2-man crew and they were able to complete our job in 3 days. They did a great job cleaning up too. Very happy with my overall experience with Kotch’s Windows-N-More and would recommend them to anyone looking to replace their windows!"

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Minden-city, MI

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
