"I used Gil a few years ago to deal with water damage in my home from a leak in the roof and cracks in the foundation. I was so pleased/satisfied/totally blown away by his workmanship and professionalism that I called him immediately to get a quote for replacing my termite-damaged front porch. Gil came out immediately to inspect, and before he could even put his proposal together (much less have a contract in place) he returned the same day and shored up the porch that had severely damaged posts. This was “so that he could sleep at night.” Needless to say, Gil is a consummate professional. "Matt came to inspect our roof and found another tile that needed to be replaced in addition to the 2 that were already broken. He came the next day to do the job. In addition to replacing the tiles, he fixed other tiles that were previously repaired by another company. He was efficient and did an awesome job. "This was an experiment for me in use of an interior designer online.  THe consultant was helpful in directing me to useful websites to review products and encouraged me to look widely and that was useful. Otherwise I found it difficult to use her services. The online aspect is one reason - looking at colors, e.g. wall colors and considering them for a particular space is difficult to do given than monitors and lighting change the look of things. Also, one cannot get the sense of e dimensional space from 2 dimensional tools
 In addition,  she was only allowed to advise me on one room and I have an open space that includes living, dining and kitchen areas, all of which had to be considered together. It was frustrating that she was not allowed to think about the other spaces when I had to think about all of them together.
The designer pushed me to choose a rug before choosing living room furniture but I preferred to choose the furniture first as it is more difficult to replace.  She was not able to be flexible on this account. Also, when I did not seem interested in buying through their service she seemed to loose interest.
It often took several days for the consultant to get back to me. That is the area where I most fault the individual as opposed to the set up of online consulting. 
In the end, I made my own choices and am happy with them. The experience gave me more confidence in my own instincts.
