"I gave this man $3000 which was 33% of the job upfront. Was supposed to give him 33% at the halfway part And 34% upon completion. But when I went to my bathroom and realized you left drugs in my bathroom and I have small children. Not like that 3000 black and small cleaners caught easy and heâ s lucky he hasnâ t been charged with nothing. Only reason that happened is because I wouldnâ t pursue charges. He obviously is a drug addict and has a problem so maybe he should get help Possibly isnâ t the option maybe rehab is. If you paid for supplies, you got ripped off wait 10 years and it will all fall apart charges for certain stuff but buys different stuff so he can use the extra money to pick himself up drugs without nobody noticing, I am so terribly in grief over this. $3000 he ran off with how is Matt doing in business and not in a jail cell"

"MC General Construction were absolute professionals. Mandi Cocka, the owner of the company is fantastic. The team did exactly what they said they would do and cleaned up the site each evening upon completion of their work that day. Mandi and his crew were a pleasure to have work on our project which was a very detailed and difficult job. I am a detail person so i expect expert and quality work and that is exactly what we received. I would not hesitate to hire MC General Construction in the future. I highly recommend Mandi for your future projects. "

"My experience with them was amazing. I was looking for someone reliable to replace my old rotten deck boards with the newer updated trex deck boards. Alco was efficient, reliable and did an excellent job. I Will be using for all my major projects moving forward. They had great customer service, able to answer all my questions and complete the on time. "

"I was satisfied in the beginning with the work but the flooring that was put down is coming up. Called several times over 3 months with pictures for repair to no avail. Drywall is substandard with many bumps. Unfinished areas. New window put in but framing not done. Asked several times over two month period they never came back. Had the 3 rooms gutted but the installation not done correctly. Cold air is coming in through the cabinets and walls. I purchased Fabuwood cabinets, which the installers would have put in. Joe the salesman stated they had put dozens in using this product, but the installer said it was his first one. Not honest. They were supposed to do a walk-through for all the repairs and unfinished work. They never showed up. Would not recommend this contractor and told my family who needed work to not hire them. Very disappointed and charged for work without my approval. "

"This company is like the local business where you feel comfortable hiring!! When speaking to Amber, the wife of the owner she is knowledgeable and very helpful in choosing what would be the best color and style while not pushing any particular style. Just listening to what u r looking for and directing you to it. Fred the owner is also very inciteful to what I wanted done. Gave several examples and prices along the way. No pushy salesman ! When the project manager came, Greg he was very pleasant and was hardworking. He past my expectations!! The deck is gorgeous and well built they do wonderful work and care about your project. They even cleaned up so you would never know they were here .. will definitely hire again if needed. I have already past them on to friends. "

" We hired Pete to build new steps to our front porch. We are totally satisfied with what he built. They came out beautifully. For each step of the project he went above and beyond. He is very professional, meticulous and knowledgeable. We will definitely hire him again for our needs in the future. "

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Newton, NJ

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
