Project: Remodel a Garage
Walnut Creek, CA w

We hired Treeium, with Liran Luger as the project manager, to finish our garage. They completed the project on budget and ahead of time. The job site was kept clean. We had a question after the job was finished, but I just called Liran, and he sent over a crew member within an hour.

Project: Remodel a Garage
Oakland, CA w

Guy Breuer was our contractor. We'd previously interviewed 3 other potential contractors. We felt that Guy really listened to what we wanted. He had economical suggestions to make our freestanding garage a climate controlled work area. He got our permits with no drama! John was our foreman. He and his dad Juan were a pleasure to have around. When John had a question, he asked. And then he actually listened to the answer. We also liked Jose, and found him really responsive to our questions and wants. None of the guys ever balked at my slightly quirky wish list. The garage was built in 1920, and still retains both of it's original doors though, as with most 95 year olds they've lost a bit of function. I wanted to retain as much of the vintage, "wabi sabi" rusticity of the garage as possible. Both Guy and John were very responsive to my whacked out wishes. There was only one real glitch along the way. When it came time to do the electrical wiring, the first electrician sent out came after 5:00 PM to do the job. I had a feeling he was in a bit of a hurry due to the late hour, and the fact that the inspector was due a day or two later. He wired for lighting as though we were doing a dropped ceiling, rather than keeping it open. Before I really knew there'd even been a problem, a new electrician was out the very next morning, doing the job as specified, and on time for the inspection too. Guy was helpful throughout in advising me as I sourced material for the garage. He always let us know where we were in the project, and what to expect next. He helped us keep the costs down, and plan our space so as not to stress the garage's nonagenarian bones. In the future we hope to remodel a sunporch into a second bathroom. We would easily considered working with Guy and his crew again.

Ideas & Inspiration from Oakland Addition & Remodeling Contractors

Oakland Garage Remodeling

There are many reasons for garage remodeling in Oakland, and with one of the most diverse communities in the nation, Oakland garage remodels are likely to be almost as varied as its population. Depending on your particular situation, you may need additional parking space, more storage space, or you may simply want to optimize the space you already have. More involved garage remodeling projects can even convert the space into a bedroom, home office, or even a separate apartment. No matter what purpose your garage remodel will serve, knowing your options and taking the time to plan are two things that will make the project a success.

Organization Options
In many cases, Oakland garage remodeling is done simply because using the space for its intended purpose of housing a vehicle has become difficult due to excessive clutter. Many homeowners have found themselves in the situation of lacking storage space in the main house; an obvious, though ultimately ineffective, solution for this scenario is to turn the garage into a storage area for everything that doesn't already have a specific, designated space to occupy. Over time, lack of organization in the garage can easily create so much clutter that fitting a vehicle in your garage is impossible.

If this describes your current situation, there are a few things you can do to fix the problem. While off-site storage or transferring the clutter to an attic or basement might work in a pinch, utilizing well-designed storage equipment in your garage is probably a better place to start. Oakland garage remodeling contractors should be able to take advantage of your existing space and reduce the amount of clutter without significantly altering the structure of your garage. Often, room can be found on walls or below ceilings that can be used effectively by simply installing the right storage equipment. Some handy homeowners may even tackle this type of remodeling project themselves.

More Involved Remodels
While reorganizing is a solution for a large segment of homeowners' garage woes, some situations will require more involved garage remodeling. Oakland homeowners looking to increase the size of their garage to accommodate another vehicle may also want to look into adding new flooring or built-in cabinetry and shelving. The advantages of flooring options such as rubber tile and epoxy coating are well known in commercial garages, and can make your garage more attractive at the same time as making it more functional. Well designed built-in cabinets and shelves can often reduce clutter and save space better than free-standing storage equipment. This could even end up saving you some money by reducing the amount of additional space that will have to be built to house an extra vehicle!

Converting Your Garage into Living Space
In a relatively mild climate like the one found in Oakland, garage remodels can be taken to yet another level by turning the space into a living area. Garage conversion projects can get extremely complex and will require hiring a professional in nearly every case. This kind of work is generally going to require rewiring, more insulation, a significant amount of weather sealing, and alteration of the actual structure of the garage. In certain cases, garage conversion will also require reworking plumbing and ductwork. If you want to convert your garage into a bedroom, living area, or separate apartment, you may want to hire a general contractor rather than a garage renovation contractor, as they might be better prepared for a job of this nature.
