"I came home from work to find our 40-gallon water heater was not working (it was working that morning). The pilot was out and I could not get it re-lit (I do know how to light a pilot) After checking a number of companies on Angie's List, I contacted DB's Plumbing and Drain. Although it was almost 6pm, a very nice person answered the phone and I explained my dilemma. I was told they could send someone that night but would have to charge an after-hours rate. I was reasonably certain what was wrong would not be a simple fix like re-lighting a pilot so scheduled a visit for the following morning between 10 am and 12 noon. Michael D arrived shortly after 10 am. He was very courteous, polite and professional. Before entering my home, he donned a pair of shoe covers which was kept on as long as he was in the house. He diagnosed the problem as being a failed main burner system. As the water heater was 14-years-old, I weighed the cost of replacing just the main burner system on such an old unit against replacing the unit itself. I opted for the water heater replacement. Michael setup the old unit to drain while he went to retrieve the new one from their warehouse which took him about 45 minutes. Upon his return, he removed the old unit and cleaned up the area. He then cut back the existing copper lines to eliminate the numerous soldered couplings from the previous homeowner's repairs. He installed new copper pipes including a new quarter turn shut-off valve. A catch pan was placed and the water heater setup in it. Up reconnecting the gas line, he installed a sediment trap or drip leg (it did not have one previously) which catches sediment sometimes present in natural gas. After bringing the system online, Michael checked the gas line connections for leaks using a detection monitor. The installation was clean and neat and it is obvious Michael is conscientious about his work. Always interested in how things in my home work, Michael was very gracious in answering my questions regarding the installation. I am very happy with the install.and would like to thank Michael for his professionalism and the education."

He kept the work area clean, putting down a tarp to protect the floor, and even cleaning the area under the old dishwasher. As to value for the money: plumbers are expensive, who wouldn't want to pay less, but considering that I did not have the tools or the skills or the experience to do this job and Jeff did, he was worth the money."

The pros: They come right away when I called first thing in the morning, they had the tools to fix the issue quickly, and the price was about where I suspected it would be. The cons: The first diagnostic was that my (less than two years old) water heater was leaking. When I told them that didn't make sense, they then did some more investigating and realized the condensation line from my AC unit wasn't draining out of my condo and was backing up into my pan, which was correct, however the suggestion was that the installation of my water heater was correct and that the heater and pan needed to be elevated so the water didn't back up. When I again said that didn't make sense as this was my second summer with the AC running and I hadn't had an issue before, they said there was a possibility the line was clogged. I had mentioned that someone in my building had a similar issue at the beginning of the conversation, but it seemed to take a long time to get to the actual issue, which is what I had suspected from the very beginning. While we ultimately got to the heart of the problem and fixed it quickly, it was a frustrating for me to have to push back so much to get to the right answer."
