Eventually his tools were not quite up to the job (the clog was deeper than his snake could reach) so he fixed the other problem (replaced the shutoff valve under a toilet) while waiting for word from the office. Eventually he came back the next day with a longer snake and cleared the drain! Charged me the quoted price, never tried to upsell or overcharge me even though it took much longer than they expected. "The technician was on time and courteous.  My A/C wasn't blowing any cold air, so he checked the air handler first, then checked the heat pump.  The freon was very low, 1.5 pounds in a 3.5 pound system, so he charged the unit with freon.  The air was fine after that.  He did a check for leaks from the evaporator coil "on the house" and showed me that the coil was losing coolant from several spots.  He recommended that an engineer come have a look about a system replacement since it was impossible to tell how long the coolant was leaking - the main issue being that the coil had several leaking spots.
Overall the service went well.  The price was a function of the high price of freon ($90 or so per pound), so it could have been any HVAC company getting dinged on the price issue.

Did not clean up as well as I would have liked or endeavor to prevent debris getting to my carpet from his shoes. However, did not leave any major debris and followed my request to wipe his feet on mat I provided. It's only fair to admit that I am an especially neat person and was able to clear up minor amount of dirt and small work particles vacuuming for about 5 minutes."
