"I was not happy with the carpet cleaning because they didn't move my furniture. They just cleaned the carpet around it. I thought the price was high for the service provided. I would not use them again for my carpet cleaning."

"Absolutely wonderful work done at an extremely reasonable price! Prentiss was always very friendly and helpful throughout the process of getting a quote, picking out our carpet & flooring, and setting up an install date. The services rendered went far above and beyond what was expected, and it was extremely nice to have such eager, polite and kind workers in our home. Would absolutely recommend and we are likely to reach out to Portage Flooring first if we ever need other flooring jobs completed in our home.!"

"Our purple carpet had about 100 urine stains from previous dogs and our own. The specialist, Robert, matched to color and treated every spot. If we didn't know where they were, we'd never know they spots had been there. Perfect job!"

"It went great. I had to have some wall to wall berber type carpeting stretched and rolled better than it was. Reason? It's a modular home that was split in two, moved, then re-seamed up. The house move crew did a great job re-seaming the carpeting but I needed the carpet rolled and tacked down better. Jim did a great job. Would hire again and refer to others. I think he also does fencing."

"I originally purchased the deal to install a doggie door in my basement door but needed additional work done also.  Tim contacted me and we discussed the doggie door and since he couldn't fit in the whole days work for quite a while and I needed the doggie door within 2 weeks, he told me he could fit me in for the doggie door but he would have to put me on his waiting list.  So here we go, right off the bat I had to pay for the doggie door separately because he had no time in his schedule for some time to fulfill a whole days work (got the $299 for a whole day)  After you purchase it, you find out that it is only for 6 1/2 hours of work or 3 1/4 hours if 2 guys are working on it.  When he came, he started the work but was having issues getting it all the way in.  So he pulled the door back out after working on it for a half hour and brought it up to show me what the issue was.  I asked him if he gave it all he had to push it in and he said he would try again.  Seems he had no problem getting it in after that.  So good he got it done, but con he wasted time taking it back out and putting it back in when he could have had me go down there to look at it.  When he arrived, I asked if he would have time to put together an entertainment center I had just purchased and found that it was way over 100 lbs so I could not assemble it like I thought I could.  He said yes but needed his helper.  After installing the doggie door, he started getting all the parts arranged and completed it when his helper finally arrived.  Tim did a good job so happy about that part of it.  Then scheduled him to do the baseboard to use my deal for the whole days work.  He arrived and set up the saw and got started and then his helper arrived and they completed the work. I was pleased with the work. <br /> Though Tim's work is good.  I was a little put off by his comments about his pricing.  He is a lot more expensive than other companies and he made some comments to defend his pricing and also talked about another client though he didn't name the person, of course.  Tim does a good job and he is overall a pleasant fellow, but I was disappointed with the overall value. <br />"

"I contacted Empire and a salesman came out to quote laminate flooring installation.  On the day of the initial quote, this individual called to delay the appointment 2 times which made things very inconvenient for me.  When he finally got to my home in Battle Creek to quote the service, he neglected to measure and include a room that I specifically asked to have included in the quote, while quoting me a cost of $5500 for approximately 550 square feet of surface area.  After passing on the offer, an Empire phone rep called me up a week later and said that they could do the same service with a different style of laminate for $3900.  That seems like the kind of thing that a good salesman would include in the initial discussion.  I called the salesman up and scheduled another appointment, after which I reduced the amount of sq ft in the quote to 450 and went with the different style of laminate to reduce costs.  Once all the measurements were done and the product had been selected, the quote changed to $3800, which I found disappointing considering what I had been told by the phone operator (since the sq footage being installed dropped by over 15%). <br /> Empire farms out their installation services to subcontractors, and the salesman was quick to advertise that they had 17 crews working in the Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area at the time.  The installation crew is supposed to call your home on the day of installation to give you a timeframe for when you can expect them to show up.  After prepping my house for installation by moving my furniture and belongings out of the 3 rooms being serviced, I received a call on the Friday day of appointment from the service manager at 11 am.  He stated that over 80% of the boxes of laminate for my installation had been damaged in transit from their warehouse in Detroit, so I wouldn't be able to get the work done that day.  I took the day off from work, put my dog in a kennel, and was very disappointed that I was being inconvenienced further.  The manager further assured me that he was going to send a top notch crew out to my home on the following day. <br /> When the installer arrived with his crew (it was a husband and wife team) I discovered that the laminate Empire ordered for my home was in the wrong quantity.  I had ordered 16 boxes of cherry for the living room/dining room, and 13 boxes of white oak for the master bedroom, and they switched the amounts.  Now I was in a position where I had to decide to just get the work done with what there was, or send the crew back causing a further delay.  I chose to just get the work done (after getting my wife's approval to move ahead with the botched color scheme) since I was sick of being stuck in limbo on this project.  <br /> The one thing that Empire did right was subcontract the installation services out to Absolute Flooring (517-243-1765).  The owner/installer was very punctual, very professional, and did an outstanding job of removing the old flooring.  When the laminate got installed in the three rooms being serviced it really made my living space much more comfortable.  If I had to do a similar project to this one again, I would have ordered the laminate through a warehouse myself and contracted with a local company like Absolute Flooring.  Empire was an inconvenience and a disappointment, and I would not recommend their business to any of my friends, family, or acquaintances. <br />"

"It was smooth. Removed old carpeting from both areas, installed main floor the first day and then returned for lower level next day. They saw the stair wall needed touchup and allowed us to paint before they laid the carpeting on the stairs"

FAQs for carpet installation projects in Otsego, MI

Carpet rolls come in standard widths of 12 and 15 feet. Less commonly, you might find a roll 13.5 feet wide. There are no standard roll lengths, but they’ll have enough to cover almost any home.

You’ll need equal amounts of carpet padding and carpet. Carpet padding costs $200 to $500 for the average room. However, the padding is trimmed a couple of inches away from the wall on all sides to make room for tack strips. Most residential installs have padding, and professionals include this in their bids.

Often, the best carpet for basements doesn’t include a pad. You’ll find this mainly in humid areas or places with a high-water table.

One linear foot of carpet or other material is simply one foot measured in a straight line. You typically aren’t going to measure carpet this way. It’s quoted in square feet or square yards.

There are nine square feet in one square yard of carpet.

The amount of carpet you need to cover two rooms varies depending on the room size and configuration. Measure the floor space. Multiply width times length. Do this for both rooms and add the numbers together.

You’ll need between 80 and 110 square feet for 13 stairs. For unique stairwells, you might need more.

Measure indoor/outdoor carpet like you would any other area, taking the width times the length. For patios, make sure to add a couple extra inches to wrap around the edges. Indoor-outdoor carpets cost an average of $3.50 per square foot.

You’ll need enough carpet to cover the entire area of damage to avoid seams. For example, if you have a 4-inch tear in the middle of a hallway, you’ll want enough carpet to stretch from door to door or the next available seam. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you might be able to get a professional to do an invisible seam repair.

One square foot of carpet is one foot long by one foot wide.
