"Derek called us right back within the hour and came that day to give us an estimate. He started exactly when he said he would and also showed up everyday when he said he would. He was kind, considerate and professional. He was very conscientious about his work and made sure we were also happy with it. Also, he was very considerate and caring about our puppy and his well being. We would definitely hire him again and would recommend him without hesitation."

"Wonderful! He's very good. He did our roof a couple years ago too. Did a great job. Price was cheaper than everybody around. Cleanup was beautiful. We've had people here before doing our gutters that have just left a real mess and Jimmy was just meticulous with the clean up. He did a great job. He was here promptly when he told me he would be here and he cleaned them. He was only here about an hour. He gave me some advice about my downspouts. He did a great job. Good price too for gutters. I'd give him an excellent. He's been very prompt with us and good. When he tells you he's going to do something, he's here. We called several people. He was the cheapest and he did the best job. He's very nice too. A very nice person to deal with. He's good. He goes out of his way. A good guy."

"From the very start, We were sincerely impressed with Kiefer-Randall's level of professionalism as compaired to others that we interviewed. We had a slow start due to weather conditions but when things got going the process was relatively smooth. When there was a question or concern it was answered or delt with prompty. We were never left in the dark not knowing what was happening. Towards the end of our projects we had a one man crew and I was pleased that they had sent Kevin to do the finish work. He was always in contact with us and making sure we liked his ideas and plans for the little things that made a big difference. For example the ending edge of our deck hand rail wasn't left as a straight cut. He cut it in a 3 sided (half hexigon) shape that just made it more appealing. This is just one example of his detail work, there were many others. We had a Great expereince and would not think twice about requesting Tim and Jim of Kiefer-Randall to do other projects that we have forthcoming."

"Dan went above and beyond our expectations installing our new leech field. He even added additional drainage for wet area we had in our yard! Dan was great to work with and even worked late to get it completed. Heâ s our new â go to guyâ when we need something done, or have questions about doing something the right way. I highly recommend this company for any of your upcoming projects, you wonâ t be disappointed."

"We got a lot of estimates for our roofing job before deciding to go with Dante and his company. Dante went above and beyond with our project. He also sealed our RV roof as well. We would recommend Dante his company to anybody. It was a pleasure dealing with him."

"Went very well. Robert was very quick to respond to my initial email, he called right away to schedule a time to come look at the project.   Very often I feel as though when contractors come to give a quote they make me feel like I've put them out and that the work will be a challenge.  Robert didn't make me feel that way at all, he was very confident he could do the job.   He was available to work with my very tight schedule and came the next day to do the work.  He followed up with a phone call to make sure I was satisfied with everything.  Great service and would highly recommend.

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Owego, NY

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
