"I scheduled a chimney cleaning and inspection with CSE.  They had <br /> previously helped restore/fix our old chimney when we moved into the <br /> house.  They cleaned the chimney efficiently and without making a <br /> mess.   Then, they fixed a draft issue by removing some excess <br /> concrete.  Excellent service.  Excellent knowledge.  And they stand by <br /> their product.  Very glad I chose them. <br />"

"This repair went very well. This company knew exactly what was needed for a one-story residential chimney and hearth, and worked efficiently. Wilf, who directed the project was professional and very easy to communicate with. He told us exactly what they were going to do and how much it would cost and answered our questions on a daily basis. The different small teams that specialized in certain parts of the work (e.g., filling in the cracks, installing the liner, laying the tile) all were good workers and friendly. Done in good time, and our chimney now works well and looks great!"

"We've had a problem with birds and a squirrel coming down our chimney. One chimney is in the kitchen for an indoor grill, and there is our fireplace in the den. We have rarely used either the grill or fireplace in the mid-century home we inherited from our parents. We decided to get the chimneys capped to prevent animal invasion. Luna's Chimney Sweep had very good reviews, so I called and was informed by Violet what the process is and that they offer a free estimate. I made an appointment and Pedro Luna and his assistant, Chris, arrived promptly on the appointed day and time. Mr. Luna explained their service and also gave us good information about the operation and mechanisms of fireplaces. He did the inspection and told us the problem areas that he found and gave us the option of how much work we would want to have done on the fireplaces. He said they could start work that day if we accept the estimated price, or make an appointment for them to come back another day. We decided to have the recommended repairs done that day, with cleaning and capping of both fireplaces. The work was completed in a little under three hours. Mr. Luna and Chris were thorough, efficient, and neat. He reviewed the work done with us and made sure we were satisfied with everything. They were careful to clean up afterward and the work areas were left spotless. We are pleased with the work done, the price seemed fair, and Mr. Luna was careful to explain everything and to make sure we understood the hows and whys of what he was recommending and doing. I would not hesitate to use his service again or give a referral to others."

"The repair looked fine but I can't really comment on that until it rains again!  The company was very professional and a pleasure to deal with.  It did take awhile the get the repair appointment but since we are in the middle of a drought that was not a problem.  We will definitely get a bid from this company when we have to replace the entire roof in the future. <br />"

"They did a pretty good job. He was thorough, but he made a couple of mistakes. There was a technical part of the job where you don't sweep the chimney. You don't put the cleaner in, it will be more hurtful to put the cleaner in, then to start it up and let the black stuff go out. The smoke go out. I let him start it. Everything was in good conditions, it just hasn't been running in twenty years. When he started, black smoke went around the neighborhood. More like dust. Black dust. It sometimes carries a little bit, and everybody has a pool. It got in their pool. He sold me a sparker rector. It was avid. I had the money to purchase it, and he installed it for a $100. Its a dangerous job, you get on top of the roof, on top of the chimney, and use your power tools. Its harder than average. I got a good grade. A good certificate. It last a few more years. He was right on time. He was responsive. He started it up and the light was in the thing that was connected in the wall. The flames were in the lamp he had in there. A mechanic lamp. I had somebody plus my mom that is a 100 years old. Nothing happened. By the time we got talking to each other, I bought a fire extinguisher. Safety prep. It was a good price by the way. They certified the chimney."

"Max arrived on time the first day.  He immediately put paper/plastic covers down to protect the areas that he would walk on from our front door to our bedroom.  He took the time to really plot out where the wall would be, the angle, etc.  He then explained what he would be doing and got to work. The first day, he pulled back part of the carpeting, framed the wall and set the fireplace to make sure I was happy with its location.  He then removed the fireplace to allow me to run the electrical lines, which I was going to do myself.  The second day, he ran the gas line across the attic and down to the area of the fireplace.  He reinstalled the fireplace, vented the wall, and hooked everything up to test it.  Once I was satisfied with it, he unhooked the gas line from the unit and placed a pressure gauge on it for the mechanical inspection. I wanted to be there for the job, so he didn't come back for a few days (mutually agreed upon schedule).  In the meantime, the city building inspector came out for the mechanical inspection.  The inspector was very impressed with what we were doing and it passed inspection with no problems. The third day Max came out, he hooked up the fireplace again, including installing the remote receiver in a custom-made cubby hole that he built, and tested everything to make sure everything was working well.  He then drywalled the new wall and began the process of taping/mudding.  It was looking very good at that time! The final day, Max returned (on time, as usual) to finish the job.  He began by reinstalling the carpet, finishing the mudding and, once he had it smooth to his liking, he textured the wall.  At the end of the job, he cleaned everything up, received his final payment, and left us with a beautiful new master bedroom.  Now, it's my turn to finish up the painting and trim work. We are very happy with his work and would recommend Max/Fireside By Design for anyone who wants a new fireplace or wall installation!"

"<p>I was looking for a bonded and insured chimney sweep to inspect and clean the one fireplace that I use during the holiday season.  I have a single-story house with two prefab chimneys that are back-to-back and roughly in the center of my home.  The one I use (family room) was last cleaned about ten years ago and we suffered through the hot summer with the smell of smoke filling the house.  The other chimney (livingroom) I don't use so I asked them to ignore it.   </p> <p>Scheduling the appointment was a breeze and I called to confirm two days before the scheduled sweep.  The office manager (Jo) was very pleasant and helpful throughout the process.</p> <p>The team arrived right on time the day of the sweep.  Burten, Phil, and two other crew members were involved in the cleaning and inspections.  Since the placement of the chimneys required walking on the roof I expressed some concern to Phil about the possibility of breaking the arched concrete tiles.  Accepting that it was likely some would break, I asked Phil to just let me know if it happened so I could have them repaired.  He assured me they'd be careful and he'd let me know if they did happen to break any.</p> <p>The crew prepped for the sweep by covering everything in the family room with plastic to prevent soot from getting everywhere. </p> <p>The first thing Burton ran into was difficulty in getting the spark arrestor off of the chimney.  It'd been there long enough that it had rusted in place, but ultimately he was able to get it off and spent some time cleaning it up and getting it back into working order so that it could be re-used.  He then swept the chimney while the other two crew members vacuumed up the soot and debris.</p> <p>While this was going on Phil described the type of chimney construction I have, the types of problems they've seen with them, as well as other chimney construction methods and materials used throughout Southern California.  He showed me photographs on his iPad of the (frankly amazing) things they've encountered and how they remediate them.  </p> <p>Next up was the inspection of all of the chimney components, including a camera inspection of the entire flue.   Burten was able to point out on the video what looked like cracks but were actually seams in the flue liner that were just part of the method of construction.  I was also able to see the glaze that has built up over the years of my not cleaning it frequently enough.  But fortunately, no cracks or other issues that would prevent me from using the fireplace were noted.</p> <p>The external inspection (and they did both chimneys) revealed some apparent water seepage around the roof flashing that could be seen on the chimney brick in the attic, as well as some cracks in the external brickwork above the roof that could lead to problems down the road.</p> <p>Along with the inspection report I asked to have estimates provided to re-do the flashing, strip, prime, seal and paint both chimneys, and replace both spark arrestors.  (I'm writing this the day of the sweep and I'll update with additional information as I get it).  There was absolutely no pressure to do anything more than the sweep and inspection, and Burten made a suggestion regarding the gas lighter in the firebox that I can do myself.</p> <p>All in all, I'm relieved that I don't have any major expensive problems to deal with, relieved that this supplier was prompt, knowledgeable, experienced, and honest in their dealings with me, and relieved that I can use my fireplace this holiday season with the peace of mind that it's safe to do so.</p> <p>Boston Brick is primarily a masonry company and it was obvious to me that they know their stuff.  That they took the extra time to explain and demonstrate so much to me -- and do a quality sweep and inspection as well -- makes them a winner in my book.  Fantastic value add for $200.  I highly recommend them.  And no broken roof tiles!</p> <br />"
