"After buying a home in Little Rock in 2021, I employed Bert Black AC to maintain and clean my air conditioning system. I paid for an annual maintenance agreement. During the first 13 months I lived in the home, Bert Black AC came to my home to service my system on 3 occasions. After being in the home for approximately 14 months, I noticed mold growing in the top of both bathrooms. I immediately hired a testing company and a building scientist to determine the problem. They both informed me that my air conditioning system had not been maintained properly. A review by another air conditioning company revealed that Bert Black had not removed the top of my outside system to clean it properly. As a result of proper maintenance, dirt and debris had clogged the system and it was no longer removing humidity from the air. This resulted in a major mold problem throughout the home. When it was determined that air conditioning maintenance was the issue, I phoned the Bert Black office and requested to speak to Michael Love, the CEO of Bert Black. I spoke with Judy, the office manager on 3 occasions. On all the occasions, she refused to allow me to speak to Mr. Love. Around the time this problem occurred, I had paid for a second annual maintenance plan. Since I had no intention of using Bert Black in the future, I requested a refund. Judy refused to refund the maintenance plan fee. The cost of testing, air conditioning maintenance and mold removal was around $15,000.00. As a result of health problems related to exposure to the mold and at the recommendation of the mold experts, I was forced to sell the home. I highly recommend that no one use Bert Black for air conditioning services. The poor quality of work that they performed in my home resulted in significant health problems and major costs to treat mold growth in the home. And when a problem occurs, the office manager will now allow anyone to speak to the person in charge, Michael Love."

"I called this company after experiencing a higher than usual water bill. I was told at the time that I scheduled service that there would be a $40 dispatch fee, but that there was a coupon on the website that I could use to offset that charge. When the technician arrived, he immediately told me that there would be a $391 leak locate charge. I agreed to this, as it was not as high as the water bill. There were no visible signs of a leak, and believed at this point it was still worth it. After the leak was detected in the water line 15 minutes later, I was informed that it would be an additional $331 to fix dig to uncover the leak. I was charged an additional fee to fix the leak (a small connector needed to be replaced), and after the repair was made the technician informed me that the water pressure was too high and it would require another $350 to replace the regulator. I declined their attempt to stick me up further. Within 24 hours the same leak was back, and they have refused to return and fix it. Do not use this company. The best reviews on their web site contain the phrase “we will make it right”. They will not do it right the first time, and will stick you up. Just because I got ripped off for $811 does not mean that you will have to."

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Pine Bluff, AR

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
