"A roof is one of the more stressful home improvement experiences you can have. It protects your investment, there are many service providers to choose from and it is expensive. Making the right choice without over-spending, and not getting sub-standard results, is a little scary. I needed to move fast, but I knew I had to get at least three estimates. The first to quote was a company that is on the TV/radio. They quoted the highest price, overlooked the need for sheeting on half my roof (missed the shiplap) and spent more time talking about the evils of smaller companies than selling their own company....pass. The second company was a highly rated company, sold themselves well, but also missed the shiplap and the estimate was almost the same as the first, though with more upgrades; I kept them in mind. The third estimate was Forever Roofing, and you know by now who I went with. Sam contacted me shortly after I reached out to them and he was out to estimate my roof within 48hrs. He quickly called out the same issues the other companies did, but also caught the need for new sheeting (about 10 roof squares). Thanks to this I knew he was going to give me a more accurate estimate. They came in about 15% lower, so we talked about the estimate differences and it comes down to overhead. For example, they don’t have PCs in the company cars, aren’t using satellite software to create a fancy quote and aren’t paying for TV/radio spots; that savings is passed on to the customer. I agreed to go with them and was put on the schedule. Two weeks later it was time to get started! His husband and wife crew knocked out 33.5 roofing squares in about 3.5 days (house and a big detached garage). They timed it perfectly between weather systems and Sam was quite communicative about when they’d be there and what they’d be working on so I didn’t have to worry about scheduling. The roofing duo was very polite and efficient. Their work lined up with what we agreed upon in the contract and what I had read during my roofing research. The lower price wasn’t resulting in a lower quality product, so I knew I had made the right choice. Bonus; what I was quoted is exactly what I paid, as there were no surprises or missed details. All said and done, it was a pleasure working with Forever Roofing/Sam and I’ll be recommending them to anyone looking for a roofer. I feel great about my roof for the first time in years and that’s thanks to this company."

"CJ came and spent some time with me during the initial estimate. Very pleasant salesman that's easy to relate to and very detailed on how the whole project would be done. The crew that came out to replace my roof were quick, polite and cleaned up well after each work day. (2 days for the roof) Three Tree Roofing provided a huge dumpster for them to throw the debris in which was parked in my driveway, and a honey bucket for their use. There was one issue I had with the skylights and installation, but it's not enough to sway my opinion of this company. The company that Three Tree hired to replace my gutters were exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly as well. I've hired many contractors over the years and have never been so pleased. I HIGHLY recommend them. Last thing I should mention......... I received a nice little gift in the mail after the project was completed. Nice touch!!"

"They weren't the lowest bid we received, but we were confident of our choice after meeting with them -- and are VERY happy with the final results. Our positive impression of Rain City began during the bidding process, when we asked how much we could save by tearing off our old aluminum siding and restoring the sheathing ourselves. The answer was startling, especially given that another firm's estimator had simply blinked and said their bid would be unaffected. That also gave us a chance to install several exterior outlets and lights in time to have them properly trimmed out by R.C. Through each phase of the project, Rain City's crew and staff were prompt, courteous, relentlessly professional... and cheerful! Even through long days in crummy weather, they remained hardworking and considerate of our needs (we both work at home, and were mostly in the house throughout the project). We asked for two change orders during the project, both of which were accomplished painlessly and with only minor upcharges. These guys make a reasonable profit, but absolutely defy "greedy contractor" stereotypes. Upon completion, our siding, soffits, and gutters all look rail straight -- even though our home has sagged noticeably in places. The optical illusion is so complete that our 60 year-old house looks brand new. Every penetration is meticulously trimmed and fully waterproofed. Our little house looks so much cleaner and brighter now, with its crisp window detailing and contrasting gable color, that we're a little afraid of our next tax assessment. In fact, we liked Rain City's work so well that when we found out they also build decks, we immediately reengaged them for that project. It also went quickly, painlessly, and came in on budget despite a brief confusion on rail spacing that entailed several hours of re-work. The deck, like the beautiful Hardie siding, makes an impressive upgrade to our modest little house. They didn't make much mess at any point, and even volunteered to haul off leftover debris of ours (in addition to the detritus generated by the deck project) when they cleaned up our site; there was no charge for that. Really just over-the-top service, every step of the way. I would recommend Rain City Exteriors to anybody interested in a quality, timely siding job or deck project. Although our siding was delivered with factory-baked paint, I imagine Rain City's painting crews are as quality-conscious as Jose and his boys were for us. Thanks, Rain City. You guys rock!"

"We had leaking in the second floor den and first floor garage ceiling 1 week ago. Our HOA hired a roofing company, they put tarp on the roof. They don't know how to repair tile roof. But we still had leaking after they put tarp. It's very difficult to find a roofing company available this year, especially in winter season. Everyone is busy. I found 1st Choice at Home Advisor. Joe contacted with me quickly. He communicated with me and HOA president very well. He explained the reason we had leaking after we sent him some pictures. Then he sent a technician to help us do the emergency dry in. Very professional work. We are very satisfied with 1st Choice. Our tenants are very happy as well. Will hire 1st Choice again in the future for other properties' roof repair and replacement. 1st Choice is on my top list now. Thank you again Joe."

"We hired them for moss removal on our roof a few weeks ago. They did a good job removing the moss on our roof and did an excellent job cleaning the gutters on our roof. Great job overall. I will definitely hire them again for gutter cleaning in six months."

"This company is legit when it comes to air and heating repairs. It was them that I was able to hire for my unit's issue, and I was glad that they forwarded me its masterful technician to do it. A very dependable technician who amazingly performs the task and finishes it within an hour. Fast forward a year later and I want to add a heat pump to my home and the same technician came out and quoted me and excellent price, I could not say no and went ahead and let him and his installers install a new heat pump so I can efficiently run AC and Heat in my home. A truly excellent and effective service! Thank you and more power!"

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Pioneer-square, WA

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
