"Fabulous! The showroom service is excellent - lots of options to choose from. I was able to take good-sized samples home to see how they looked in my kitchen. The installation was amazing! I had purchased an undermount sink and was a bit worried how the corners would match up. It is perfect. The fit and finish are superb and the cost was about the same as a big box store. Totally satisfied with my experience! <br />"

"Sales personnel were wonderful as was the project manager who came to do the measuring and oversee the project. However the installers, while doing an adequate floor job, showed total indifference to the well being of my property, an attitude culminating in them going for lunch and leaving my garage wide open AND THE DOOR TO MY KITCHEN WIDE OPEN, with heat pouring out into the cold garage. While we had only started to move in, there still were a number of things that could have been stolen or vandalized, the project manager was apologetic but I had to press for a discount due to installer stupidity. It finally was granted. I would consider using this firm again, but will not leave my house while work is being done."

"<p>From the initial contact in the store to the final installation everything was flawless!  Our contact Paul knows his stuff and he made the entire process so easy.  He came to the house for measurements and made some suggestions.  The installation was scheduled and the installer arrived on time on the date that we scheduled.  When a blip came up about floor height, Paul was back in no time with the extra materials that were necessary and the schedule was not impacted at all.  The installer was fabulous, professional and meticulous.  </p> <p>It was a pleasure to deal with this company and I would use them again in a hearbeat!</p> <br />"

"I generally have a good experience at Home Depot.  The sales associates are, if anything, too helpful.  It is impossible to walk through the store without getting an offer for assistance 10 or more times.  If you are trying to find something, just ask.  The associates always know where it is, no matter how obscure the item.  They are also knowledgeable about how to do the job and are willing to provide professional advice. <br />"

"Needed new flooring and carpeting. Read about Floor Systems on Angie's list so I called them up. A person came over and did measuring. Since I don't live too far away from Floor Systems I went over to see what they had. Excellent selection. Since the new floor was going over the old floor the flooring had to have a particular backing and I found a design to my liking. As for the carpets I had a remnant in one room as the room itself is small. I did not use a remnant for the other room. They use an outside contractor for installation who has been doing this for many years. Took him two days to do the installation. First day the carpets were done and the floor was prepped for installation which was done the next day. Overall they were very courtious and professional and will work with you on price, selection and to earn your business <br />"

FAQs for carpet installation projects in Portland, ME

Carpet rolls come in standard widths of 12 and 15 feet. Less commonly, you might find a roll 13.5 feet wide. There are no standard roll lengths, but they’ll have enough to cover almost any home.

You’ll need equal amounts of carpet padding and carpet. Carpet padding costs $200 to $500 for the average room. However, the padding is trimmed a couple of inches away from the wall on all sides to make room for tack strips. Most residential installs have padding, and professionals include this in their bids.

Often, the best carpet for basements doesn’t include a pad. You’ll find this mainly in humid areas or places with a high-water table.

One linear foot of carpet or other material is simply one foot measured in a straight line. You typically aren’t going to measure carpet this way. It’s quoted in square feet or square yards.

There are nine square feet in one square yard of carpet.

The amount of carpet you need to cover two rooms varies depending on the room size and configuration. Measure the floor space. Multiply width times length. Do this for both rooms and add the numbers together.

You’ll need between 80 and 110 square feet for 13 stairs. For unique stairwells, you might need more.

Measure indoor/outdoor carpet like you would any other area, taking the width times the length. For patios, make sure to add a couple extra inches to wrap around the edges. Indoor-outdoor carpets cost an average of $3.50 per square foot.

You’ll need enough carpet to cover the entire area of damage to avoid seams. For example, if you have a 4-inch tear in the middle of a hallway, you’ll want enough carpet to stretch from door to door or the next available seam. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you might be able to get a professional to do an invisible seam repair.

One square foot of carpet is one foot long by one foot wide.
