"Mark and the team from New Image Remodeling were excellent. They provided fair, competitive pricing and did absolutely A+ work. We are so happy with our new basement and get nothing but compliments from friends and family on how great it looks. From the start, Mark and team were extremely easy to work with. They were clear and transparent with their communication and always professional & courteous. They did a great job of working within our budget and were very flexible and accommodating even when we requested changes in the scope of work. When minor issues did pop-up (as they always do), Mark & team were on top of them right away, even coming out on the weekend if necessary. I would recommend New Image Remodeling to anyone looking to finish or remodel a portion of their home and they'll be the first call I make for any future projects."

"We had Steve Phillips from Matrix Basement out to our home this evening. Steve was very polite and professional. Took the time to view our basement space, gave good insight and suggestions of what layout options would work best. Along, with drawing out the layout for us to visually see. Steve answered all of our questions. We look forward to working with Matrix Basements and having our basement space finished for our family to enjoy."

"We hired Restoration Plus to do a complete gut and remodel of the kitchen of the 1965 era home we bought. From planning layout to picking out materials, Scott, Ryan, and their crew were knowledgeable and professional. The work crews were polite and friendly. Everything was done in the time promised and done very well. We are very pleased with the work and we couldn't have asked for a better team. I highly recommend this company."

"Excellently.  The only delay was from the weather, we had a really wet spring in Michigan.  But they worked though most of it.  <br /> <br /> We are sitting in a room of the addition that "Jack Built".  It is a beautiful space that far exceeds our expectations.  The detail work is something to behold and we are sure we will enjoy it for many years.  <br /> <br /> Following a bad storm thousands were without power, we were without power for nearly a week.  Jack arrived with a electric generator so he and crew could continue to work.  He discovered our basement flooded , he used the generator to plug in our sump pump to empty the water.  He turned on the dehumidifier  and two fans.  His quick action saved us quite a bit including no obvious mold problems. <br /> <br /> We would very highly recommend Jack Duncan Palmer Builders."

"Palmer's entire team is professional, punctual, and responsive.  We renovated a kitchen and doubled the footprint.  A wall that was to be removed was not initially felt to be load bearing.  Upon opening the walls it became apparent that it was indeed bearing.  Palmer worked quickly with our architect and an engineer to find a solution.  The remedy required pouring a footing in the basement, a new post in the basement, and three LVL beams in the kitchen ceiling.  All of this work added to the budget but hardly set back the schedule.   <br /> Palmer is willing to work with a hands-on / DIY homeowner as well.  I was able to do the demolition, build and install the cabinetry, do the tile work, and painting myself in order to save some money.  Palmer was always available to answer questions and made sure that work I did was correct.  <br /> Dan Smeak was our project manager and Dale (?surname) was our onsite foreman.  Both are the epitome of professional. <br /> They were willing to listen when I noticed things that were not to my liking as the project progressed and corrected them very quickly.  For instance, I asked them to raise a window so that two windows were level as opposed to the same distance from the floor (old house, uneven floor), and they did it the next day.   <br /> They organized the subcontractors well and when we had issues with work of the subs they remedied it. <br /> Overall, we were extremely happy with our experience and will definitely use them again in the future.   <br /> A blog of the project is available at www.martinrenovation.blogspot.com <br /> <br />"

"We have a 1958 ranch and the only bathroom had never been renovated. We wanted to start from scratch down to the studs for a 5’ x 8’ footprint. Sales person was very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable in selecting the various components and colors for the bathroom. The contract was very clear and detailed. Payment expectations were 1/3 upfront, 1/3 at the start of the project, and 1/3 at completion. The shower install was completed by Bath Works, which had a 12 month same as cash financing for the shower portion only. HWC coordinated and selected the various trades involved, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, shower install, and painting. The start of the project was pushed back several times, but communication was good. The actual work process was expertly done. The workmen were respectful, cleaned up each day, and were highly skilled. My wife and I are so satisfied with the end result. It is like going to the spa everyday. We intend to renovate the kitchen and basement down the road, and will definitely be turning to HWC in the future."

"I'm very pleased. I had concerns about dust and fumes from the epoxy. The dust was minimal and fumes were not an issue at all. If I had to do it all over again, I'd set up a box fan with filters, as I've seen on YouTube, but even without that, the dust was not overwhelming. The workers arrived on time, explained what they were going to do and welcomed my checking in on them. When they went to lunch, they cleaned up their work area, (even put the toilet seat down in the basement bathroom), something I didn't expect at all. I had questions when they were at lunch, and the salesman got the answers I needed quickly. A couple of things I would change about this process: 1. After they were done, cleaned the area for the day, and put their equipment away, one of the workers invited me downstairs to approve their work. If I had not approved, it was a bit late for me to object as they were packed and ready to go. I suggest in the future the homeowner be asked for their approval before everything's packed up. Their work looked good, but this seemed like a manipulative tactic that wasn't appreciated. 2. The more experienced of the two workers explained early on that he needed to remove some insulation but assured me he'd put it back when he was done. When I saw that he'd not put it back, I mentioned it. He refused to put it back, saying "It doesn't matter". It was an odd way to end a perfect job up to that point. I was totally pleased with how everything was handled, and then that comment and behavior from him just put a bad taste in my mouth. That evening or the next day, I received a very nice gift from the company that was just a really nice touch. A couple of weeks later, we had heavy rains and I experienced water along the walls where the work was done. Within a week of me raising the concern, an arrangement for a technician to visit my home was made. I appreciate their prompt attention to the matter. I expect it's very simple like needing more epoxy at the base of the straps, so I decided to go ahead and submit this review. It's difficult to find trustworthy people to do work in your home. I'm very relieved I found a company that is totally worthy of that trust and highly recommend Acculevel. The work they did looks good and solid."

"My service tech, Jordan Foy, called promptly in the morning and arrived right on schedule. He was friendly, knowledgeable and did a great job installing my sump pump and the underground line. He made sure I approved of what he was going to do each step of the way. He was also very nice to my golden retriever puppy who wanted to be his assistant. I will be using Ayers Basement Systems again for additional work on my basement next spring."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Portland, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
