"Steve does almost everything, and in addition to being a great handyman, furniture maker, and painter, he is also personable and completely unflappable. He gave me an estimate of the time it would take to do the jobs I outlined, and he was spot on. He did little extras without tacking on extra costs. This was the first time I hired him, and I trusted him so much that I made a second list and he was able to do the second list for me right away for an additional and also reasonable price! Among the things I had him do was remove two cabinets that were holding on by a prayer in my kitchen. They weren't really useful to me, but I ended up with dead space over the refrigerator and he suggested a shelf. He matched the oak exactly to my cabinets, and then customized braces to go with the hardware on my cabinet doors! It's a fine job and opens up my kitchen while still providing storage in a really unique way. Will definitely hire Steve again in the future!"

"I found iKitchens on Angie's list last summer after I moved to the Cape. Lou Ann and Rich, the owners, were very pleasant to work with. Their project manager Jim was terrific as were Tracy the office manager, Chuck and Dan, the two guys who did most of the work. They pulled out all of the old fixtures and put in a one piece surround tub/shower, new toilet, Ikea vanity, marmoleum flooring, light fixture, fan, mirror and cabinet. To save some money I did the painting myself. The electrical and plumbing was subbed out and they did a great job too. The project took about 5 weeks overall which was a bit longer than than I hoped. Sometimes a worker would come for a couple of hours only but I think that is the way it has to be done (waiting for things to dry or waiting for the next sub, etc). The price seemed a bit high, especially for a one piece surround and Ikea cabinet but they had to do a lot of demo. The most important thing to me when doing projects is the people-all were great to work with, professional and nice. They kept the space as clean as possible. I hired them again to do my kitchen so look for that review next! <br />"

"I have now had 4 pickups from this company. Each time it has been with different items: I have had my kitchen remodeled,  a deck torn down and rebuilt, a new roof put on, old fencing disc arded, and a yard cleanup. The only difference in pricing was for the roofing and even though ti was more money it was STILL CHEAPER than a dumpster!!! I don't know how these guys do it, but they pickup on time, without issue andfor the cost quoted. I have turned each of my contractors onto them - now they are using them. SO MUCH cheaper and better service than any dumpster company I have used!"

"George has provided handyman services at my home in the past. Early 2021, I hired Ocean State Property Services to do a kitchen renovation. It did not go as planned due to supply chain disruption and freight carrier delays that resulted in my cabinets arriving damaged from the manufacturer, this did not sit well with OSPS and they quit the job early. George and his team did a great job with the demolition, plumbing and industry connections (i.e. flooring, countertops, plastering). The downside was inefficient communication and negative attitude stemming from the contractor's frustration. In the end, George did not complete the job but left on amicable terms. I would hire George again for another job that had "less moving parts" to it. PS His helpers are fantastic!"

FAQs for cabinets reface projects in Portsmouth, RI

Absolutely. Refacing returns 65% to 80% of your investment at resale, and you get an updated kitchen right now. Because you’re not paying for new boxes or demo work, the price lands well below complete replacement but still delivers a fresh, custom look that buyers—and you—notice every time you walk in.

To trim costs, start by pricing a high-quality paint or gel stain instead of full refacing—stain alone can be one-third the price of full refacing. Keep existing hinges and pulls if they’re in good shape, and shop sales for sandpaper, primer, and sealer. The sweat equity is real, but so are the savings, and a careful DIY job can still leave your cabinets looking sharp for years to come.

A professional crew needs only three to five days to reface a standard kitchen, although a larger layout or intricate door style may add one to two days. Compare that with the several weeks a full cabinet swap can drag on. In other words, you get your space back fast, often before the paint on the new doors is even fully cured.

Yes, you can replace just the cabinet doors and drawer fronts without covering the cabinet boxes. Cabinet refacing involves installing new doors and drawer fronts while applying veneers to existing cabinet boxes. If you’re satisfied with the condition of your cabinets, swapping doors and drawer fronts reduces labor and materials, saving you time and cost. Always consult a professional to confirm compatibility and ensure a seamless, high-quality finish.

Most cabinet refacing projects do not require removing countertops because professionals can access doors and drawers around existing surfaces. However, if your countertop overhang prevents full access to the cabinet boxes, contractors may need to lift the countertop to install veneers properly temporarily. Discuss this with your refacing specialist during the on-site estimate so you know exactly what the project entails.
