"Tommy, Larry, and the whole team were terrific. They do great work, and get along well with each other. They are also exceptionally friendly and polite . . . we even had neighbors telling us after the fact how nice the guys had been interacting with their toddlers as they walked by. And I found that if I had a question or concern or minor change to make, every one of the guys felt empowered to go ahead with the request. Highly recommend them!"

"The Marlowe crew did a beautiful job on our patio extension and fire pit. They stayed in touch with us on every detail and made sure that our expectations were met. We made a change or two after the project was underway and Jake and his crew were very accommodating. These guys showed up on time, were courteous and kept our yard as neat as possible while they were working. We will consider Marlowe’s We Care Company for future improvements to our home. "Kyle and Casey are extremely competent craftsmen. Project exceeded expectations in all respects and would absolutely hire again. The details, including the portion of structure you can't see when finished, were "over engineered" for durability. Nicest pool deck in Sandbridge beach!"

"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

"Chuck Hipp and his employee, Antonio, did a phenomenal job! The brick fireplace was sinking and the bricks were separating from the wall. After investigation Chuck determined that there were no footers under the fireplace. He installed new footers, supported the brick wall and reattached all the bricks and suggested the fireplace be covered with stucco and tiles to match the Spanish style of the house. The fireplace turned out beautifully and became the true focal point of the living room. The house was listed for sale and I know the beautiful stucco fireplace helped to sell the home quickly. We moved to our new 1948 house and discovered that the chimney needed to be rebuilt. I received a bid from A Step in Time chimney sweeps which was astronomical. I then consulted a structural engineer who confirmed the bid was outrageously high. He recommended a good brickmason be consulted. I found Chuck Hipp and Hipp Masonry Works on Angies List. Chuck investigated the problem and determined that the chimney needed to be torn down and rebuilt at the roof line and he was able utilize new bricks with old bricks to match the new chimney addition to the existing home and bottom half of the chimney. He asked me to drive around and take photos of chimneys I liked and he would duplicate it. I found a chimney on a beautiful older home and Chuck was able to duplicate it to suit my brick, Tudor home. It is gorgeous and best of all the fireplace can now be used for a beautiful wood fire. He then removed and replaced all the broken, damaged bricks throughout the exterior of the house using mainly old bricks salvaged room the chimney rebuild. Chuck and Antonio did incredible work and at half the price of the previous bid. Before they left they brought in topsoil to fill in any holes in our lawn due to the work and they used soil to regrade the back of the house which had been the cause of damage to lower bricks. They also repointed the front steps and remortered the boxes for the exterior porch lights which were hanging loose from the brick exterior. I will only call the HippMasonry Works for any brick work."

"We had a bit of a rocky start.  There was a miscommunication in the beginning about when they would come.  The first date scheduled got cancelled.  Getting in touch with the company after that was little trying.  In the end, we got together and a date was scheduled.
The crew showed up I explained what I needed them to do and they got to work.  I was very impressed with their work they worked quickly to get all the work done.  They took out 6 to 7 LARGE shrubs that had died over the winter.  These shrubs were DEEPLY rooted and not easy to dig out as they had been there for several years.  They also weeded 2 flowers beds and put down some prevention weed killer for me.
The crew that I worked with was very professional and friendly.  Their work was excellent.  I was very pleased with the result.  I would use this company again .

"Absolutely first-class from start to finish!  From the initial consultation, estimate and design by the company ownership to the final stages of installation by a top-notch crew, we were very impressed with the professionalism, expertise, communication and flexibility of Belletto's entire team.  Through the design phase, Dan Belletto was extremely responsive in responding to service calls and visits to help through modifications, and provided great advice to ensure our project was completed to our complete satisfaction.  The installation crew was superb--courteous, talented and also helped us through some last-minute modifications with great recommendations.  The project was started and completed on time, and they voluntarily worked over the weekend to make sure they met all deadlines.  The project included some electrical mods, construction design, tiling, light installation, insulation, painting and more--and every phase was executed with perfection, accuracy and technical expertise.

"They had to reschedule several times, but TMT did a good initial job replacing some turf and installing crush and run. Owner seemed like a competent guy. Wanted to use them for lawn care except mowing. I offered to sign a maintenance contract. Never returned several emails requesting help with my lawn or treatment for summer 2017. I can only assume they either are not professional enough to follow up or have so much business they can blow off the average homeowner."

FAQs for brick and stone patios, walks, and steps installation projects in Portsmouth, VA

When cleaning your flagstone patio, begin by gently hosing off loose dirt and debris. Use a mild solution of white vinegar and water or diluted dish soap to scrub the surface with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using abrasive tools, such as wire brushes, as they can damage the stone’s seal and finish. This careful approach effectively removes mold and grime while preserving the natural beauty of your patio.

Flagstone naturally offers a neutral palette that includes shades of grey, black, red, yellow, brown, and tan, and its inherent color cannot be altered. Choosing varieties like bluestone provides a subtle bluish tint that complements many exterior designs. These natural hues enhance curb appeal and create a refined, timeless look in your outdoor space, ensuring a sophisticated finish with minimal upkeep.

Flagstone for a patio must have a minimum thickness of 1.5 inches to reliably support furniture and foot traffic. Using stone that is two to three inches thick is recommended to ensure lasting durability. The increased thickness prevents cracking under load and enhances long-term performance. Investing in thicker flagstone provides superior stability and resistance to weather conditions, ensuring your outdoor space remains both safe and attractive.

You can paint a flagstone patio by using a high-quality, outdoor elastomeric latex paint designed for heavy foot traffic. Painting not only refreshes the patio’s appearance but also creates a waterproof barrier that protects the stone from damage. Regular reapplication every one to two years maintains its durability and visual appeal, ensuring your patio remains both stylish and well-protected.
