"Do make sure you and your contractor understand each other and explain exactly what you need and want.  Most often
old homes will have problems with dry rot, termites, old electrical and a good contractor lets you know you have these problems and will give you an estimate of what it will cost to fix them.  My opinion is if you are going to have a job done you should not mask problems.  We were fortunate not to have had dry rot.  The bones of our house was in very good condition.  However, our electrical panel was going to need replacing.  If you have your home already open to reside or whatever you are doing the extra time and cost is worth it.

We chose Sierra Sunscreen--nobody else came even close to Dan's professionalism and expertise, and the quality of what he offered. He was extremely easy to work with, spent a lot of time helping us decide on the details, and his price was very competitive. His installers were courteous, efficient, timely, and the quality of their work more than met my expectations. I would highly recommend Sierra Sunscreens."

"They did a very good job. The house looks beautiful. They even performed all of the work in 1 day! A couple of things to keep in mind when using this provider. The deals they offer on Angie's List are excellent. However, there are extra costs that can add up, such as painting a detached garage even if the total square footage is under the allowance of the deal. I got a very fair price for everything, but that is important to keep in mind when considering whether to purchase a deal. Second, they are a mom and pop operation and it can be a challenge sometimes to get a hold of them or stick on schedule. It can be difficult to get them on the line on occasion. I've used them 3 times, and the work has been rescheduled at least once each time. Make sure you have some flexibility when considering whether to purchase a deal through them. They do excellent work when they get out there!"

"Spectrum One is our choice over and over again for renovating our home, which was built in the 1960s. Dennis comes out and looks at the scope of the project and gets back to you in a timely manner with an incredibly detailed and professional proposal. He takes into account your vision for the home and offers suggestions for improving the project or explains how the team can make that vision come to life. The project managers who oversee the project from start to finish have been diligent, respectful and ensure that the work being done is of the highest standards. They are on-site every day with a whole team working to get the job done as beautifully and as quickly as possible. The attention to detail from the whole group is what I most appreciate. We have used them for whole-home flooring (removal, installation and baseboards), recessed lighting, countertops, backsplash and would trust them with any project. We recently completed a third project with Spectrum One that included widening doorways, redoing an outdated fireplace hearth, and remodeling two bathrooms. "We had been trying to install a patio in our backyard for several months to replace a damaged wooden deck that a previous owner had built (and bulit very poorly at that). With our own labor, we had demolished the deck, attempted to shore up the wooden patio cover, and excavated a pit for a paving stone patio... and then we ran out of gas. After calling several contractors, we finally chose John Irwin and Royal Garden Landscaping, as he indicated that he could do all the work that we wanted, which included re-using pavers that had been installed elsewhere in our yard for the new patio and doing some work on the patio cover to anchor it more securely.
The weekend before the work started was the tail end of the big storm system that swept through Northern California in early December, so the entire backyard was flooded, including the pit that we had dug for the foundation of the patio. John came over on a Saturday afternoon with a sump pump that he loaned us to drain the yard, and the work started the following Monday.
The entire week was on and off rain, but the Royal Garden Landscaping crew worked tirelessly over several days to complete the job. The mason did a great job, and the prep crew worked their butts off to get everything ready for the installation. When it came time to work on the patio cover, there were some significant difficulties for the crew, as the existing structure, like the deck that it once covered, was not especially well-built, but they literally worked into DARKNESS (remember this was early December) to get the work done. The entire job took four days total (an additional day was lost due to rain) and finished by Friday evening. John returned with the mason and the carpenter once the work was completed to do some follow up work, and he also made sure that the clean up was done properly. We are very happy with our new patio and appreciate all the work that John Irwin and Royal Garden Landscaping did to get it done in a timely and professional manner.
