"I have hired New England Carpentry several times for various projects, including facade repairs and repaint on a 3-story multifamily property in South Boston to replacing deck railing and balusters to building out a washer/dryer door frame to fit a larger set of machines. Gil has always been responsive, reliable, and fair. He always worked through what his client wanted but gave recommendations to save cost without sacrificing quality and look. Gil is trustworthy and my go-to for any project. This review is also after some time has passed and I can confirm his quality work holds up. "

"I have worked with Meadows construction in the past on a new 2 level deck and was very impressed with their workmanship and the crew. They are VERY hard workers. We needed a very large addition and kitchen/living area added and their work is great. We had a couple of issues come up because of the work an outside architect had done but Mike and I worked it out. His foreman is spot on and his crew are just wonderful to work with. He and his foreman were always a phone call away as I was away during construction. They had solutions when we had questions and followed through on them. On a project this large there are always bound to be things that come up but we always managed to come up with solutions. Mike, Brian, Otti and the rest of the crew, we thank you for making our plans come to fruition and doing a great job. He promised to be done in April and he came through on that promise. Looking forward to settling into our new spaces. thanks guys"

"We’ve been working with Jorge and his team for about two months now on a major two-family full gut / reconstruction project in Watertown. The property was in serious disrepair (not a light renovation) and the scope has been complex — demo, excavation coordination, permitting, and preparing for framing and full rebuild. So far, Jorge has been excellent. His team has moved with real speed and professionalism, and he’s been extremely responsive throughout the process. What stands out is that he takes the job seriously — he’s organized, communicates clearly, and is willing to work through creative solutions when the project throws curveballs (which always happens on a heavy renovation like this). He also has a strong design eye and gives practical feedback on what will actually work in the field, not just what looks good on paper. As a licensed GC myself, I wanted to partner with someone I could rely on to help manage a project of this size and complexity, and Jorge has delivered. We’ve"

"Claudiney and his team handled multiple aspects of our home remodel after we purchased it. They were responsible for all the interior and exterior painting, re-paneling, bathroom renovations, and plumbing work. Their performance was outstanding, and I continue to rely on them for ongoing projects. occasional projects that crops up. I can highly recommend Claudiney and his team."

"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a roof replacement."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Rockport, MA

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
