I bought a "deal" on Angie's List for an A/C service call for $49.00  (a $79.00 value applicable to the cost of repairs) from McLay Services, Inc.  McLay was chosen because they were local and had many satisfied customers in my neighborhood, based on their Angie's List reviews.  The telephone personnel were very courteous and helpful.  I called on a Wednesday late in the afternoon from my work and got the appointment time I wanted for Friday morning.  They said they would sent Marty, who had been favorably mentioned as very knowledgeable and professional, so already I was having a good feeling about this whole thing.  Researching the reviews on Angie's List is like getting a personnel recommendation from a trusted friend or relative.

Well, Marty arrived on time and lived up to his and his company's Angie's List reputation.  He was personable, courteous and quietly knowledgeable.  He got right to work.  The first thing he checked was whether there was adequate power getting to the roof-mounted A/C unit.  The reading was very low, so he tested the circuit breaker, which proved to be bad.  I happened to have a good 50-amp circuit breaker to replace it.  The condenser tested good (to my great relief), but the condenser fan motor and the squirrel cage fan motor were both burned out.  In less than an hour, Marty was able to tell me exactly what was wrong, what was needed to fix the problem and about how much it would cost.  And, throughout the process, I felt like Marty and I were co-workers working to solve this problem together, rather than like an expert and a novice, although he is definitely an A/C expert!

The only downside to the whole experience was the fact that it took ten work days to get the parts.  I call McLay Services once during this time and they needlessly apologized for the delay, even though I know it wasn't their fault and if there was some way they could speed things up they would do it.  When the parts arrived they called and told me that Marty would be there at 7:30 a.m. , which I doubted, but he was there at 7:25 a.m.!  Completion of the entire job took a little less than four hours and it was getting extremely hot on the roof, so Marty and I were very glad it didn't take all day as had been estimated.

Once the unit was running, he checked the refrigerant level and added about a pound of Freon.  Marty then used a handheld device to check the temperature of the air entering the intake and at the ceiling vents in another room.  It was 84 degrees F going in and 62 degrees coming out - extremely good for a 24 year old A/C unit.  He also cleaned my HEPA filter and suggest where I might find disposable filters of this odd size (24" X 24"), which would place less strain on the compressor than the HEPA filter.  After some adjustments for the deal I had previously paid for and an addition for the Freon the total was less that the written estimate.  I wrote a check and  have been really enjoying my central air, especially when  I come home to a cool house and during the night.  Thank you McLay and Marty.  I wish I'd called you sooner!
