"One day we noticed a musty smell in our bathroom. Behind the toilet the baseboard was discoloring and rotting out. We called our insurance company and the leak had damaged the wall and floor. The insurance company gave us a list of contractors to call. We called three of them left messages and waited. Well we didn’t have to wait long for Berry Construction. Randy called us back almost immediately. He was caring, empathetic, professional and explained the whole process from start to finish. We were very happy with Mike, Billy and the entire staff. We had open communication through the whole process, and they did an amazing job making us whole again. We will most definitely call Randy Berry and his team for our next remodeling project and highly recommend them for yours!!! Tony Wigney @thewigneyminute 559.790.4387"

"Jack's All-American plumbing recommended Amundson's to me, and gave me Sean's phone number. Sean called me back promptly, and came out the next day to look at the shower and give me an estimate. <br /> The shower needed to be fixed promptly before mold got out of hand, and we also needed to get the shower out to see the extent of the problem. Sean was booked for the next two months, so he assigned the work to his brother-in-law, Jim. <br /> Amundson's worked very closely with Jack's, so that the plumbing and shower installation were coordinated and time wasn't wasted. <br /> Sean will work with you to keep the project within your budget and as close to the estimate as possible. <br /> We came out pretty close to the estimate. I'm not sure that it would have fit anyway, but I couldn't see putting the old shower door back on my spiffy new shower, so I bought a new shower door, and I bought a remnant of vinyl flooring and had Jim put it in for me. Both upped the final cost a bit, but they were completely worth it. <br /> I am very happy with how my bathroom turned out. <br /> Sean and Jim are caring, honest, nice, professional. They do what they say they will do, when they say they <br /> will do it. Jim does excellent quality work, and I am happy to recommend Amundson's and will definitely use them again for the future projects that we are now planning. <br />"

"The guy came out on time, change the 5 locks to all be on as few keys as possible, just like we asked. The only problem was that the first time we called Pacific Locksmiths, and thought we scheduled someone to come out, they didn't actually schedule anyone. The second time we called, they did send someone, and it went great."

"It went very well. Doug does most of the work on his own (which keeps his prices very reasonable) and is amazingly efficient, pays attention to detail and does high quality work. He's also very neat and organized--our project lasted for a couple of weeks due to schedule issues on our end and availability/arrival of materials, he always left the worksite clean and organized and kept disruption of our lives to a minimum. We had granite countertops installed by a major home improvement chain, Doug went above and beyond to remove our old countertops for the sizing/measurement and replacement with plywood in the interim while our countertops were being cut. He is a man of integrity and very trustworthy. Several times he shoveled for us and even started my wife's car for her one cold winter day. That's service!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Santa Maria, CA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
