"I'm ashamed that it has taken me this long to get around to writing a review for Alex and his team. What prompted this is he texted me this morning asking how we were, how everything was with the addition, and if anything needed addressing - who does that a year and a half after project completion? Easy answer - a person who you should work with, if given the opportunity. We knew Alex was "the guy" after we met him and got our initial quote. Before meting him, we received numerous outrageous quotes from (very) popular local contractors. In addition to the quotes being ridiculous, these contractors were also never confident in the job, which seemed odd to us, because the scope of the project didn't seem insane. Alex comes in, says no problem, verifies that it's totally possible, and a couple weeks later we have a vetted blue print and an exceptionally reasonable quote. When we decided to pull the trigger on dormering out our attic to add two rooms and a bathroom, we had little to no idea as to what the job really entailed (roofline, heat zoning, access to the rest of our house, etc.). Alex was in constant communication with us each step of the way, and in an extremely accommodating manner, where he gracefully put up with us changing our minds on certain things. Example, my wife decided we should have lights in the closet - the sheetrock was already up, but Alex said no problem and threw lights in there. A larger example - we decided that we should also finish the space above our garage - again, no problem. If you have a job, big or small, and are able to work with Alex and his team, I cannot recommend it enough. I believe building and maintaining client relationships is the life-blood of a successful business. It is clear as day that Alex has mastered this concept. This is a team you need in your corner."

"Brian and the Zono team completed a new ground-level deck and upper deck railing remodel & stairs for us. I found Brian to be a great partner during the design process, and I felt like we ended up with something that felt custom to our space and needs. The crew was friendly and showed care around our home. Best of all, we get to enjoy the deck as a family!"

"Vito and his crew finished our 800 sq foot basement and we couldn’t be happier with the job done. He walked us through each step and answered any and all questions along the way. Him and his crew were always punctual and professional. They didn’t stop until everything was perfect and they had our seal of approval. I can’t recommend them enough, we absolutely love our new space!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Schenectady, NY

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
