"*Roof- The only way you can communicate with any of the roof workers is if you know Spanish. Three flat tires due to nails in driveway/ grass. The new gutters we’re not angled correctly and were filled to the top with water pouring over onto my porch. *Porch- they had to come back and install and replace proper anchors and use screws instead of nails after failing inspection on overhang and base attachment of large porch. *Still waiting for them to complete final inspection (after failed inspections ) after almost a year. *The stairs and cement pad were installed crooked at an obvious angle and the cement pad was not up to inspection codes. When I brought this to their attention it was a shrugs her shoulders. But after failing inspection they just poured another crooked 6” of cement adjoining the original which looks absolutely terrible.. Will do nothing about the porch stairs. Still waiting for final inspection on that also. * Front storm door was installed. Water runs inside from the top of the door installation which has space and is obviously not Installed correctly. Door has lock but no key was provided even after I requested one from Steve. It’s been almost a year since they completed the job and I am still waiting for a final inspection to close out the permit. I made the mistake by paying them in full . **Make sure not to pay them in full until you get your Final inspection and closed permits. *It is march 6,2022 And I am still waiting for the permits and final inspection for work they started in June of last year 2021"

"There were about 5-7 guys and they got it done all in 2 days. We went to them with a financing package. The project foreman came out and gave us his sales pitch, he was very professional and gave us top grade stuff."

"It went better than I could have hoped for!  Alan is a nice, honest person, with plenty of roofing experience.  The day after I called, he showed up first thing the next morning.   He could tell immediately why our slate roof was leaking into our bathroom and bedroom, and how to repair it - and explained it all to me clearly.  Westside did a great job.  The crew was highly professional, courteous, kind, and efficient.  They were In and out in one day!  I couldn't believe it! They even threw in some extras I hadn't asked for, e.g., rehung a heavy bathroom mirror much more securely than my jerry-rigged method. And when I asked for one last piece of work at the end of the day (which I hadn't thought of before), even after their long day they happily stayed longer to help me out.   Every person on the crew was nice and friendly and hard working.  And back in the office - Candi was great!  She is lovely to deal with, returned emails and calls promptly.
I can't say enough about Westside Home Improvement!  (Just please don't hire them the same time that I need them again!)

"Bob and his crew were available within a week of our quote. The entire roof was torn off and replaced in 2 days. The team accomplished a lot of work in that time and cleaned up after each day. The price was the same as the quote. I owe him and his crew my thanks for an excellent job. Our new roof is beautiful!"

"I had used Remodeling Concepts in t he past for a home addition + siding + roofing and was extremely satisfied with the result. I called Derek just to see if he could recommend an electrician. Instead, Derek sent over his own company electrician to review the work to be done. Martin (electrician) did not want to open the ceiling for fear of damaging the soffits. He instead said he would run the wires thru a 2nd floor outlet to the porch. We set a date and time and he was at the house right on schedule. The job turned out to be more difficult than we thought but Martin was patient, professional and persistent. He managed to snake the wires and install the fans. I am very pleased with the work. Thank you... Martin and Derek."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Shandaken, NY

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
