Small jobs welcome

"Konstantin and his crew did an amazing job and the deck looks great. The crew was respectful, pleasant, and hardworking. They did a great job and communicated with us through the process. They offered a lot of options and were able to start almost immediately. I highly recommend Konstantin and his crew and will definitely be hiring these guys in the near future to build us a pole barn/deck. "

"Tony is fantastic, he did a lot of projects in our home, drywall replacement, installed hardwood floors, painted, performed extensive work on our deck to make it safe & stable, repaired our French doors. He did a huge job of cleaning & detailing my Grandmothers house to sell (we got $40,000 over asking price). My son hired him to frame, drywall the basement in a house he bought. He framed in & installed a hanging microwave, framed in the dishwasher as well. All in all Tony is a great guy & does awesome work. Would absolutely hire him again."

"Dennis was great to work with through the whole process and he made sure to address all of our concerns in a timely manner. He has good connections with subcontractors and was able to secure an electrician last minute when ours didnâ t work out. He had a hardworking crew who got the job done (we had to clean up after them a bit but not bad.) We did have a few unforeseen expenses pop up but Dennis was more than fair in helping us stick close to our budget. We would definitely hire him again."

Customers say: Quality work

"I would highly recommend Paul for any deck work you may need. We just purchased our home and knew the lower and upper decks needed to be repaired or replaced. We decided to replace both decks. Shortly after listing the project on homeadvisor.com Paul contacted us, and we set up an appointment to take a look at the project and to give us an estimate. About 30 minutes prior to our appointment Paull called and related he was running a little behind and would be 10 minutes late (he was actually only 9 minutes late.) Most people would just be 10 minutes late without calling, not Paul. His detail to customer service is outstanding. Paul gave us an honest and fair price and we signed a contract. Paul started the project on time and worked through some tough conditions, weather wise and finished the project on time. We could not be happier with our new decks. Paul was very professional and did an excellent job. I plan on hiring Paul again to do some other projects."

Small jobs welcome

"Completed a very large, very difficult deck replacement (over 1,000 sf, second story, integral to roof support). Pros: Very communicative, supportive, and reliable. Double checked things with us. Didn't talk down to us or dismiss concerns or ideas. Construction is sound, materials are good, and the deck is beautiful. Cons: A few minor things didn't quite finish as well as hoped. However, these can be taken care of on our end. They we're willing to talk about them. They replaced a difficult deck at a reasonable price. Every step was professional."

"Sergey and his crew did a phenomenal job on our river house in St Maries. Even though they had to travel and bring supplies with them, they secured our foundation so that it will last, replaced our old deck with new Trex decking, and remodeled our master shower. We thought all of this would take the whole summer, but Elite got it handled in under 7 weeks. We are thrilled with the results and not only will ask Elite to come back, but have been recommending them to everyone in the area."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Spokane Valley, WA

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
