"Unfortunately I give BBB a 1 star rating. The project began October of 2021 with demolition, upon completion of each phase I sent an email to Better Built Basement management thanking them for their work effort and identifying items that either required further explanation and/or resolution. As the project went on, I became increasingly frustrated with their lack of communication, lack of accountability, lack of caring, and lack of skill. The straw that broke my back was when Jim (an owner) called me a f’ing c’sucker. Randy, (an owner) sent me the following email: No one has time to read your 3-page condensing e-mails. You have done nothing but complaint. It's obnoxious and draining to everyone you come in contact with. There isn't one person who cant wait to have you out of our lives. I terminated Better Built Basements on June 7th, 2022, here are some of the details of my experience: - The demo crew was excellent in and out in a day and did a great job cleaning up - The electricians were very consultative in their approach to the project, providing input on lighting and outlet placements. - Framing was mediocre. Despite using laser equipment, one wall was wavy and the ceiling grid has a large gap. Pictures attached. - New steel stud framing and pre-hung doors should be dead on straight as an arrow instead, two of the doors has an aesthetically noticeable skew. - The replacement to an existing door resulted in using the wrong hinge set for the existing mortices, inclusive of color – all the other hardware is brass they used chrome. Picture attached. - 3 of the four doors were either chipped or cracked. BBB was notified before the ‘final’ paint job, but they failed to address the issue. - I returned home the day they applied joint compound to find glops of joint compound on the floor, which I tracked around my house, and glops on wood work on a floor where no work was occurring. Pictures attached - Following the flooring installation, they left garbage in my basement for 2.5 weeks, then did not take it when they came back – in frustration I disposed of it myself. - Many of joints on the ¼ round trim molding were caulked excessively to cover up sloppy miters. - Cracked switchhplate was not replaced. Picture attached. - Sub-contractors have sub-contractors, who seem to be able to sub contract – direct employees of BBB other than the demo and electrical were rare. BBB demands using a lock box, Many people have the combination, providing little sense of security over access to the home. Overall, BBB does a bad job communicating, managing expectations and fails to deliver on their stated objectives at best they are contractors not craftsman."

"Troy and Ace Floor pick up the phone but don’t honor their commitment and lack integrity in dealing customers . They started what was supposed to be a 3 day stair case sanding and refinish job on 6/14/2023. They sanded for 2 days and said they would return on Monday, with still 2 days of staining and poly to go it was now a 5 day project. After no showing we called and were told the schedule was full and they would come back in a week. We explained we had other trades coming in and would need it done sooner. Troy promptly told us he could not help us and suggested we part ways. I would have expected him to say we will get someone out soonest and how can we make it right. This company is a volume business and you are a number…they have 50 jobs a week, as Troy told us. I would stay clear, they lack ethics and integrity"

"Phil Catanzaro was great to work with from start to finish. I appreciated him checking in before, during, and after the project. Requesting the quote and scheduling the work was seamless, and the crew was friendly, fast, efficient, and skilled. I will definitely recommend them to my friends and neighbors, and will reach out to them again for any future work."

"Excellent! The crew was friendly, neat and considerate. And they were so hard-working, putting in long hours and hardly taking a break! The finished project was awesome and I am thrilled with the flooring that they recommended. Highly recommended!"

"When Empire’s installers came to put in our new carpet, they moved all the furniture out of the rooms (as agreed upon). However, my hallway has hardwood flooring. They left large gauges in my hallway hardwood from moving furniture. First, Empire agreed to have their installer come out and fix it or said I could obtain two quotes from licensed professionals to have the gauges in the hardwood fixed. I thought it would be easier to have the installer come and fix it. The installer came, but refused to fix it saying he did not cause the damage. Since the installer did not fix it, when I spoke to Empire, I said I wanted obtain the two quotes and we could go from there. Instead, Empire refused, claimed they had no knowledge about telling me I could obtain outside quotes, nor would they send a different installer who could fix it hardwood flooring. In short, they caused damages and refused to pay for it to be fixed. I would not recommend this company at all."

FAQs for carpet installation projects in Stonington, CT

Carpet rolls come in standard widths of 12 and 15 feet. Less commonly, you might find a roll 13.5 feet wide. There are no standard roll lengths, but they’ll have enough to cover almost any home.

You’ll need equal amounts of carpet padding and carpet. Carpet padding costs $200 to $500 for the average room. However, the padding is trimmed a couple of inches away from the wall on all sides to make room for tack strips. Most residential installs have padding, and professionals include this in their bids.

Often, the best carpet for basements doesn’t include a pad. You’ll find this mainly in humid areas or places with a high-water table.

One linear foot of carpet or other material is simply one foot measured in a straight line. You typically aren’t going to measure carpet this way. It’s quoted in square feet or square yards.

There are nine square feet in one square yard of carpet.

The amount of carpet you need to cover two rooms varies depending on the room size and configuration. Measure the floor space. Multiply width times length. Do this for both rooms and add the numbers together.

You’ll need between 80 and 110 square feet for 13 stairs. For unique stairwells, you might need more.

Measure indoor/outdoor carpet like you would any other area, taking the width times the length. For patios, make sure to add a couple extra inches to wrap around the edges. Indoor-outdoor carpets cost an average of $3.50 per square foot.

You’ll need enough carpet to cover the entire area of damage to avoid seams. For example, if you have a 4-inch tear in the middle of a hallway, you’ll want enough carpet to stretch from door to door or the next available seam. Depending on the type of carpet you have, you might be able to get a professional to do an invisible seam repair.

One square foot of carpet is one foot long by one foot wide.
