"National Radon Defense Midwest employees were very knowledgeable and helpful. As we were selling our house we discovered that we had high radon readings and needed to mitigate the problem. They explained to us the process and clearly identified what they would recommend to resolve the issue. We thought it was very reasonably priced and feel confident intheir products, staff and installation"

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"I found Don on Angie's list and contacted him to see if he served the Clarion area. He informed me that he does not regularly work in that area but he was familiar with it and was willing to do the inspection. He charged a small additional fee for milage as I was outside of his standard work area (which he informed me of up front). When I agreed with the terms, he took charge of the entire process. He contacted my realtor to gain access to the property, re-arranged his schedule so that that the timing was convenient for me (I was coming in from out of town to be there), and confirmed the date and time of the inspection with me. <br /> On the day of the inspection, Don arrived approximately 15 minutes early and after introductions, he went straight to work. He was extremely thourough and did an outstanding job during the inspection. He answered all of my questions and explained everything as he went. He systematically checked every part of the 4000sf home inside and out from top to bottom. The inspection took approximately 3 hours. The resulting 64 page report, which he got to me in less than 24 hours, included detailed descriptions of all findings, recommendations, descriptions of all appliances and equipment present in the home including make, model, and year it was made/installed in the home when possible as well as current codes and laws that would have to be followed for the various upgrades I plan on doing in the house that I discussed with him. <br /> Don was so thourough that even my realtor wanted to know where I found him. Overall, I am very pleased with his work and not only would I recommend him to others, but I would hire him again myself. <br />"

Northern Duct Seal seals duct work from the inside by use of computerized tools and equipment. The process takes one day and our technicians will provide pre-seal and post-seal duct leakage reports on the spot. The basic steps to do a duct seal are: 1) Pre-seal Test is done to measure duct leakage, 2) Registers, returns, and air handler coil are blocked off with foam plugs, 3) A UL-tested and approved aerosol is injected into the pressurized duct system, 4) A Post-Seal Test is performed to measure improvements and 5) A complete Report and Certificate are printed to provide the customer with a record of improvement. Duct sealing provides a solution to high energy bills, air flow/air balance issues, uneven temperatures, hot and cold rooms, excessive humidity, musty odors and fume smells from stored paints, solvents, pesticides, and radon gases. Northern Duct Seal will reduce duct leakage by up to 90%, saving customers an average of $600 - $850 a year, with a 2-3 year return investment, depending on variables such as weather, system usage, energy prices, and home design. Northern Duct Seal offers a 10- year warranty on the seals created by our technicians. The sealant itself has been UL tested and approved and is considered non toxic by OSHA. For a demonstration video of the duct sealing process please see the 'Ask This Old House' Video located under the Media tab on this page.

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Thor, IA

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
