"Robert Geans Corp. did an outstanding job tearing out my old concrete front steps and adjacent sidewalk. The previous steps had been poured by a previous homeowner and were in sore need of repair or replacement. Desiring brick front steps, I first contacted a bricklayer, who told me I'd need to contract separately with a concrete company to pour the base/interior of the steps, on which he would then come to lay the brick pavers. He recommended Robert Geans Corp, a company with which I was unfamiliar (as this was the first concrete work I'd needed to have done since purchasing my home.) From the first estimate and through every subsequent interaction, the folks at RGC were courteous, kind, and responsive. When I went back to them to ask what I might be able to do to help trim some costs from the project, they reexamined the estimate to offer some savings suggestions where they could while giving me their honest feedback regarding corners that just couldn't be cut for the integrity of the project. They worked very well to coordinate all measurements and planning with my mason, too. The old concrete was extracted and the new concrete was poured, and all nearby areas were returned to near perfect condition. All in all, a great project and an excellent hire!"

"Mark came out to look at the area in question. He made some recommendations for size and design to match the style and look of the house. He sketched out the patio dimensions and provided a price. I hired them and they came to perform the work as scheduled."

"Don met us at our home and we came up with a design and deck product that we were very happy with. He submitted an estimate a day later and we commissioned him to do the work. It couldn't of gone better. We are so pleased with the outcome and craftsmanship."

"We has several small puddles in the basement. We called Nova and they made an appointment to come out and look at the problem. Upon checking out the basement there were 3 cracks that appeared to be leaking water and a pipe that needed to be sealed. He also suggested that we have a gardener come by and adjust the height of the planting beds around the house.  <br /> Nova came out at the appointment time, explained the procedure, fixed the cracks, and then explained the next step. The next step was to come out and removed the small tubes inserted into the cracks to apply the epoxy. <br /> I appreciated their responsiveness and the fact that they didn't try to sell me something that wasn't necessary. Their representative who came out to look at the job seems very knowledgeable. <br />"

"First met Joel over a year ago when we needed a new roof because of hail damage.  A different contractor  had found the hail damage and gotten us approved for a new roof working with our insurance company.  I requested bids from two additional companies.  Joel responded quickly and provided a quote that gave us a few different options and price points.  Joel's  pricing  was very competitive, but we decided to go with the original contractor who had gotten us approved for the new roof.  Well we had all kinds of delays getting the roof last fall.  Contractor blamed it on the insurance company not paying enough upfront money, even though they accepted the job knowing the terms.  They had our down payment and always had an excuse why they were not on the roof.  Finally after chasing them down every few days they started the job this April.  Day one they started the job knowing that the forecast was for heavy rains the next day.  The two owners of the company were never at the job site and never followed through on any of their promises.  At the end of the first day most of the roof was stripped with the roofing felt installed.  They did not tarp the roof even though it was 100% chance of rain the next day,  They stated that they would be back in the morning.....Next day here comes the rain they are nowhere to be found and we have water coming through our ceilings all over the house.  In the end major water damage to our house more rain in the forecast and still no roof...... <b>I decided to call Joel at </b> <b>DreamScape Home Improvement again and see if he could help us out.  </b>He came right out gave us an estimate that took into account that most of the house the roof was stripped off.  Offered to move his schedule around to help us with our problem.  This time we went with Joel and he did everything he said he would do and more.  He upgraded our shingles and suggested different colors for our roof.  In the end our roof looks great.   <b>The</b>  <b>DreamScape Home Improvement crew were very professional, polite and did quality work.  They cleaned up the job site every day and took pride in their work.</b>   While other companies gave us much higher bids knowing we were in a jam (50% higher), Joel did not.  He has since worked with us in getting additional estimates to fix our ceilings and attic area.  <b>I recommend Joel and his company </b> <b>DreamScape Home Improvement without hesitation.  He did everything and more that he promised to do.  Nice to find someone that cared enough to help us out instead of trying to take advantage of our situation.  I rate Joel A+++++++++++++.</b> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br>"

"Workers were professional, worked the whole time they were at our home.  All concrete was level with other slabs, the walk was raised 2.75" on one end, and the entire project was sealed.  The crew cleaned up well after completing the job.  Very courteous, explained the process, and stayed to answer all questions."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Union, MI

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
