"Our house is 90 years old and the basement is showing its age.  The outside staircase leading into our basement has a tendency to leak during heavy rainstorms resulting in minor flooding from time to time.  We lived with this for over 20 years and never experienced any significant losses - it was just a nuisance.  More recently, one of the cracks in our foundation (we have several) started to dampen during rainstorms.  We decided to address both issues together.

We found Quality 1st Basement Systems on Angie's List.  The sales rep looked over the situation and recommended an inside underground drain and sump pump system for the staircase and a flexible patch for the foundation.  He was able to sketch out the work on his PC and provide me with an estimate on the spot.  We decided to try this approach instead of digging up the entire foundation and waterproofing from the outside.  (One contractor wanted $20,000 for this type of work.)

We signed the contract and scheduled the work.  The installation crew arrived on time and completed the job very efficiently and very neatly.  The results have been very good.  After the wettest August in the history of NYC (we live in Brooklyn) and hurricane Irene, we have had no flooding or leakage from the repaired crack.

There was one misunderstanding during this transaction.  I was informed when signing the contract that the sump pump would have to be hooked up to the sewage system by a qualified NY plumber.  Quality 1st Basement Systems could not do this type of work.  I was fine with that, but after the installation I reviewed the sump pump manual and learned that it was against code to hook up a sump pump to the sewage system.  Opps!  I did some research and learned how to connect PVC drain pipes to the sump pump.  I drilled a hole through the foundation and connected the necessary pipes to drain it outside - the only acceptable approach.  I never brought this to the attention of Quality 1st Basement Systems and ended up saving a lot of money by doing this part of the work myself.  My recommendation is that anyone considering installing a sump pump make sure they know where it will drain and work that out in advance with the installer.

"We had a 5" gutter and the guards were not affected because we have a large Maple tree.  The guy that came to do the work said that we needed a larger gutter due to the roof overhang.  He sold us a 6" heavier gauge metal.  In talking with other people, two other providers said that the gutters are larger and heavier than what we needed.  I feel like we didn't need these upgraded gutters that he sold to us.

He cleaned up very well.  We just didn't feel like this was a good cost for what we received."

"I inquired about having my gutters cleaned. I contacted 4 vendors via Angie's list. I heard back from three of them. U-Save Gutter's price was comparable to the other vendors. I chose to contract with U-Save Gutter's because they were prompt to reply, courteous and really appreciative of the possibility to do the work. Once I decided to go with them, they were here the next day. Said they'd be here before 12 and actually showed up first thing in the morning. They were polite and professional. I live in a townhouse. Once they saw my section of gutter tied into my neighbors, they still cleaned the gutter without adjusting the price that now included my neighbors' section. They did a repair that prevented me and my neighbor from having to replace a section of gutter - again, still the same price as originally quoted. They also tightened up a few spots. In all interactions before during and after, they were wonderful. I highly recommend and will use them again if/when needed."

"I'm very pleased with them. They were very prompt. They also have a downspout for one of my gutters that was down during the storm. They came immediately. Their service is immediate. They're a little expensive. Just to come to repair the downspout, they said it would be $175 just to come out whether they repaired or replaced it. I was kind of desperate. I thought that was a little expensive. He was out there for 10 minutes but he's good. They're good, thorough and fast. I will use them again. I called them not for the roof. I called them for another reason and while they were up there, they noticed that there were some shingles missing. He told me that it was only a matter of time before water started to come in to the house. They told me on doing the whole roof again. I'm planning on doing my whole roof again later this year, maybe on August. That's going to be a huge purchase, that will be $9000-$10000. I'll get a few other estimates too. I plan on using them again although I do think they're a little bit expensive. They may be worth it. They charged a flat fee. They do a lot of other things. They tried to sell me on a pest control. He noticed an old rodent trap in the back. I told him I didn't need it right now. They do interior and exterior pest control and a number of other things. The service is fat and its good but its expensive."
