"This is the second time that I have used JW Home Improvement to replace some of the wood on my deck that had rotted. Josh, the estimator came out as scheduled and was able to schedule the repair crew to come out the next day (due to a cancellation). The two-man crew arrived right on schedule and worked diligently, finishing the repairs very well. I am again pleased with this company and am happy to refer them for any of their handyman services. In fact, I have already given a reference to my neighbor for similar work."

"MENDEZ Painting did an excellent job in matching my existing engineered wood flooring, removed carpet from steps and repalce with white oak with stain to match flooring. Also installed a 20 x 30 wall tile in basement that looks outstanding. Very professional crew with expert results."

"Jesús and Fernando did a great job of making my rusty stair railings look good again after they were sanded and painted. They also fixed the screen door that always got stuck in hot weather. As a bonus, I got my mailbox painted as well! Very satisfied."

"I had an issue with my basement steps. I could not afford to replace and needed advice about how to repair. Fidel was patient, very professional and answered all my questions. He created the repair and labor around my budget. This company is very detailed and affordable. I highly recommend and have referred them to family members for home projects."

"He's awesome.  He's really good attention to details.  When we asked him a question like if I want something done and he said he won't do it; he explains it to you why.  He's just going to do what I ask him to do because he's going to make more money.  He's only going to do it when it's safe and if it makes sense.  They're all very courteous, very clean and there are no bad things on the job or anything like that.  They're very professional.  He's a little bit higher than anybody else but gives more attention than anybody else.  You're paying for what you get. "

"The result was amazing.  The work was done in 10-14 days, much faster, frankly than I had thought.  The piece was in such bad shape, I had low expectations, but I was confident that I would be able to at least use it.  Well, the work was amazing, if you didn't know where the breaks were, you really couldn't tell.  The bracing work was super strong and in places that you can't see.  The work was painstaking gluing and piecing together a jigsaw puzzle and I was really impressed.  It was not a cheap fix, but given the time it took to work on the piece and it's worth to me, it was a fair price.  I would definitely say George is an artist and master woodworker.  I would definitely use them for original work or buy their furniture."

"Very well. Robert explained the work they would do and he coordinated tile, plumbing and countertop replacement. We had an early 80's kitchen that needed help but we didn't want a major renovation. They updated our cabinets with new, larger doors, painted the frames, added soft-close hinges, and constructed a new cabinet to replace a built-in desk. New backsplash, granite countertops, and hardware. Their work was a superb value and we're pleased with our new "bright" kitchen!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Waldorf, MD

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
