"Carter was very responsive the communication was important because I was not in the area when he did the job. He sent pictures and found another area of concern asking if I wanted that repaired. I was thankful he found it and repaired that section as well. I would absolutely highly recommend Carter. His pricing was very good."

"The work went very well.  We had a few rain delays, but that could not be helped.  Also we were coordinating other work with another contractor (see R and R Concrete) that sometimes caused delays. They showed up when expected, excavated one side of the house and dug holes on the other (walk out basement) for the piers.  When finished the yard was repaired as good as could be expected for St Louis summer. I have a little work to do on it now that it has cooled off. I had to have cracks repaired inside and concrete work done on the outside.  The people they recommended did wonderful work. <br />"

"We needed our chimney cleaned and were having a lot of problems with rain leaking into the house and basement which we thought was probably caused by cracks in the chimney.  I called the office and told them we wanted our chimney cleaned and an estimate on repairs to the chimney.  John, owner of J&L, and his assistant arrived on time on the day of the appointment but didn't know anything about having to do an estimate on repairs to the chimney.  They had only come to do the chimney cleaning and said we needed to make another appointment for them to do the repair estimate.  Since he sounded like he really knew what he was talking about and sounded willing to work with us on price, etc, we made another appointment.  Again, he seemed really interested in helping us out and knowledgeable, so even though the estimate was quite a bit more than what we expected, we ended up hiring him to do the work because they were willing to work with us on a payment plan.  That was the end of the satisfaction with their work.  While they ended up doing a very good job and the chimney looks real good, it took them three times as long as he originally said it would, they never showed up when they said they would and frequently only worked a couple hours before leaving for the day.  At one point, he made statements to my husband suggesting that we had to give him an immediate cash payment for some work he hadn't included in the original estimate or he wouldn't continue the work.  We gave him the money but he would not give us a valid receipt and suggested that we shouldn't let any of the other workers know about the transaction. Flora, the office manager/biller/owner, was very short tempered on the phone whenever i tried to get information from her and it seemed like I was a real irritant when i asked for information. <br /> We believe the work John did was of a high quality but it was a very unpleasant experience working with this company.  We wouldn't hire them to do any masonry or chimney work again. <br /> <br />"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Warsaw, NY

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
