"Farzad has done a lot of major and minor updates to my home such as installing bathroom fans, light fixtures, venting my microwave outside and installing flooring. He found solutions to my water problem and stopped my garage and basement from flooding when it rains. He does excellent work and shows up on time. I would highly recommend him. "

"Jerry and his team did a fabulous job on our basement egress window. Fantastic communication, before during and after the job. Excellent workmanship. Cleaned up very well after the big job. Flexibly worked with our schedule. Jerry even gave me advice on laying out our basement remodel (we are doing it ourselves) and gave me advice on materials and design. Totally happy. Would recommend C&J without reservation!"

"We are so happy that we chose Damien and his crew for our basement reno. They were professional and excellent communicators. We had a lot going on...including drywall installation, new flooring and a new closet. The end result was beautiful! We highly recommend Innovation Contracting and look forward to working with them again."

"We highly recommend "The Hired Hand" (formerly named B Squared Home Solutions). They made numerous repairs to our deck, and completely refinished it. The deck is 30 years old, and now looks as good as new. Also, they repaired a set of wooden stairs leading from outside into our basement. I thought they were beyond repair, but are now fully functional. They started the project on the date promised, kept us apprised of their progress, and finished the job on time and at the quoted cost. We are very pleased with the quality of their work, and plan to have them do future projects."

"Hired Mike twice. The first time, I needed some new windows put in. He did an excellent job and even vacuumed, AND MOPPED my floors afterwards! While performing the window work, he offered to fix my screen door free of charge; which he noticed would slam back at ya after entering my home and then needed to be lifted up to actually shut it. He happened to already have hinges in his truck and my door worked great afterwards! Although he did not charge for the door, I did give him a tip for an overall great job done. I hired him back a few months later for a custom bathroom remodeling. He was able to completely please my wife, which is nearly UNHEARD of! He performed a custom shower tile remodel, and even created a small nook in the shower where my wife could sit comfortably to shave her legs. No more awkward standing on one foot, and for that, she cried happy tears. Our new bathroom continues to appear seamless; all of the calk blends in real good and no more tiny cracks that are hard to clean, which also brings my wife happy tears! She no longer needs to scrub with a toothbrush to make our bathroom shine. I had originally heard about Mike through word of mouth; he's been doing this type of work since he was 16 years old. I was happy to finally see him advertising online after all these years and made it a priority to leave him the amazing review he deserves. He's a hard worker, and I'm pleased to admit that ever since his very first visit to my home to install windows, we had developed a fast friendship. I invite him, his kids, and wife to every barbecue I host in the summer. Anyone who makes my wife that happy is a welcomed friendship. Great man. Great work ethics. Reliable and reasonable"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Amsterdam, NY

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
