"<p>Our dishwasher supply line broke and flooded our kitchen ruining the floor. Water ran through the floor into the finished basement and destroyed the basement ceiling, carpet, etc. It also ran into the downstairs bathroom and laundry room. The insurance adjuster recommended Weaver Building and Remodeling. </p> <p>We were very happy with his initial work. Since we had to get so much of the basement redone because of the water damage, we had him do additional remodeling. We had planned on redoing the basement a few years down the road, and we realized this was the time to do it. Doug was very good at getting back to us if he wasn't able to take our calls immediately (which he usually did). He was also very patient with us as we changed our minds about things several times during the project.</p> <p>Our water heater stopped working the day of the flood which was weird, but I thought it was probably just a coincidence. I mentioned it anyway just because. Doug called the manufacturer of the water heater and in talking to them decided that the control box of the water heater got damaged in the flood. He was able to get us a new water heater since they didn't sell that control box anymore. We didn't have to talk to the insurance company about it  (or anything else) as it was all handled without our input. (The insurance company was great to us also.)</p> <p> I was really apprehensive during this work since I've heard so many horror stories about contractors. I worried for nothing since everything turned out great. We would certainly use Weaver Building and Remodeling again without any reservations. We love our new improved basement and getting our lives back to normal has been helpful to our sanity.</p> <br />"

"Since we are local, they were able to work us into their schedule sooner than planned.  A bunch of guys showed up the first day and they did almost the entire thing in one day.  Just a few guys showed up the second day to finish things up.  They broke a stone on our retaining wall when backing out of the driveway and had it replaced within a few days - at no cost or inconvenience to us.  The ground was left clean and our flower beds were undamaged.  Excellent service and very professional. <br />"

"The work The Allied Mand E has done for me was pricey but excellent. You get what you pay for. <br /> In November 2008 I had Allied replace my 40-year-old heating boiler. The crew was very professional and friendly and did the job correctly, and at what I consider to be a fair price. <br /> In December 2008 I had Allied Mand E replace all under-cabinet plumbing and the fixtures associated with the four sinks in my house (built in 1968), one kitchen, two bathrooms, and one basement. This was the high priced part, but in the nearly four years since, I have not had a lick of problems with the work that they did. The single plumber that performed the work was both professional and a regular guy, who likes Led Zeppelin so there was music while he worked (I supplied). <br /> In 2011 I had Allied service the boiler that they installed in 2008. That too was pricey, but I did not have any problems following the service. In the past I had my fuel oil supplier, Nittany Oil Company, do the boiler service twice for significantly less cost, and BOTH times there were problems nearly immediately afterward, for which Nittany had to send a different technician to fix for no charge. I will be requesting boiler service from Allied from now on. Again, you get what you pay for. <br />"

"As far as their products for roofing they seem great quality. However super overpriced. To the point they can come down 15k+ in their estimate. However not why I give them a horrible review. We wanted a quote for a metal roof- not a FIVE hour meeting and presentation. No indication of this length of time was given when making the appointment. Insisted on both spouses present meaning we had to basically let our kids watch tv the whole time and feed them a bunch of snacks bc I couldn't leave to even make lunch without them stopping their talks. Pushy. Did not need or want a power point presentation comparing their company and prices to others (which by the way they inflated to double what it's costing us). So nope would not use them. In this age of three young kids and little time they were a total waste of a day and would have very much appreciated a shorter meeting and perhaps an email or text vs showing up at our house again the following day with a better offer"

"Due to the age and type of structure, complications arose during the renovation that were unexpected and caused the process to take longer than anticiapted. We believe Mihalko's staff put forth their best effort to rectifiy the situation and finish the project in as timely a manner as possible. Our home is somewhat unique and Mihalko's staff appeared to take an interest in preserving it's character. Mihalko's staff seemed to care about the quality of their work and in ascertaining that we were fully satisfied with the results. All staff were polite and friendly. We had no concern about leaving our home open to them when we were not present. They were very respectful of the fact that the renovations were going on while we were were living in our home. We will definitely seek out Mihalko's for any futher renovations/remodeling when the time comes that we are able to do so."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Bedford, PA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
