"I highly recommend Ultimate Craftsman Home Repair and Remodeling. Mike Belvin and his team are very knowledgeable and professional. We finally discovered the reason we were getting strange cracks in our drywall in the main part of our house was due to truss damage caused by failure of the gang plates at the bottom of our roof trusses. As we are in the most active part of hurricane season, we were very anxious to have the repairs completed quickly. At the time, Hurricane Irma was a category 5 storm in the Carribean, and nobody knew where it would go next. Ultimate Craftsman came in quickly and got the 11 damaged trusses repaired just before the hurricane hit the Florida Keys. Lucky for us, we didn't get affected by that storm, and now we won't have to worry about our roof failing when we get the next one. The trusses were repaired, the ceiling drywall repaired and the ceiling and walls repainted. Everything looks brand new. Overall, they did an EXCELLENT job, on-time and as estimated. I hope to use them again for future remodeling projects"

"Working with Rafael was an absolute pleasure from beginning to end. From our first meeting through the final stages of the project, he remained consistently engaged, enthusiastic, thoughtful, and considerate. He went above and beyond, showing a strong commitment to quality and attention to detail. It’s clear he genuinely loves what he does—his insights throughout the process were incredibly helpful and reassuring. This was a major undertaking for me, but Rafael made me feel confident and comfortable every step of the way. Even when unexpected challenges came up, I still felt great about the experience and my decision to hire East Beach Construction. The daily crew was impressively punctual. I’d see them arrive early, waiting respectfully until their official start time. The kitchen renovation was understandably messy, but they did a good job containing the disruption and cleaning up at the end of each day. I will absolutely hire them again for future projects."

"The two huge porch columns had been an issue since the house was originally constructed, which was really a shame because we really preferred the look of them. Not only did they need constant repair because of rot, they were dangerously built to be structural without the support of large center posts. After discovering a very large area of rot again last fall, my wife and I decided to finally have them rebuilt correctly. We were very concerned about more rot in nonvisible areas. I researched for about a week before I found Williamsburg Maintenance on Angi's List, reading every one of the reviews before I made the decision. I called last December and had a great conversation with Phil Nader. I described to him everthing we wanted and needed. After some conversations over the following few weeks, we decided to move forward. He explained from the beginning that they were really busy with some staffing issues. It took a few months to begin work, but he stayed in touch during that entire period. Shamus and Sherman began the teardown on July 18th, and construction was completed with fresh paint on July 22nd. The columns were done PERFECTLY!....with a lot of attention to detail, which I greatly appreciate. The were very professional, neat, efficient, and knowledgeable. I am very appreciative of the work done and very satisfied with the price charged."

"It was a breeze from start to finish, Lloyd took care of everything, If things did not quite  work out how we envisioned  Lloyd came up with some great ideas, he moved walls, moved doors, anything and every thing to keep us happy, all the while trying to stay in budget. With any older home (47yrs in this case) you will run into problems, old wiring rotting wood etc Lloyd took care of everything."

"So far it went very well. The Project Manager. Alex Phelps, was very professional, personal, and helpful. He did a good job coordinating the roofing project and was very attentive to any questions that I had concerning the weather conditions and the roof shingles. Adam, who was the Supervisor of the Sales team was also very helpful. He was prompt in answering any questions that I had and resolved any issues expeditiously. He was also very professional and personal. The roofers were also excellent and professional. The entire team at MLM were excellent!!"

"Bob Stahl and his guys did an excellent and expedient job of the project. They arrived on the day they had committed to start the work in late January.  The demo work and new base cabinet work was installed well enough in a week for the countertop provider (which I had hired separately) to measure.  They then completed the custom cabinet work, did drywall patching and aligning of everything (which was tricky because some of my walls and soffits were pretty out of plumb).  We had to wait about 2 weeks for the counter to be fabricated and installed and then Bob and his crew got right back to work and wrapped things up including the tile backsplash.  The craftsmanship and quality of the cabinets is excellent (better than any manufactured cabinets I've seen - all 3/4 inch birch ply) and the quality of the custom painted white finish is excellent. His guys were meticulous and I'm not the easiest guy to satisfy (I'm an architect).  The cost was exactly what he'd indicated it would be and the items I added to the scope of the project were very reasonably priced.  They were also very neat and cleaned up everyday after they completed work. <br /> I would hire Bob again in a heartbeat and have already recommended him to friends. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Newport News, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
