"We've been wanting to do a patio and driveway for the past 5 years. We shopped around for quotes, designs, etc...and finally decided on doing a patio and found Hoffman Landscaping late in our search.
Brian was friendly, helpful, responsive and professional from the beginning. He was able to cover all of our design ideas and gave us a great price. The patio turned out GREAT and my wife and I are VERY happy with the outcome. Brian obviously takes pride in his work and took his time to do things right. Working with Hoffman Landscaping was stress-free and had the feel like they were friends of the family, doing us a favor.
We would highly recommend and plan on using them for other projects in the future.

"Stone wall rebuild:
The crew disassembled the existing deteriorating stone wall which enclosed a Japanese maple and other plants.  They dug a trench beneath where the new wall would be installed and installed 6" of CR6. Perforated pipe was installed behind where each wall would be and it was filled with 6" of #57 stone.  The walls were then rebuilt with the addition of a pallet of matching Western Maryland stone.  The downspout drain was extended under the wall with SCH 40 pipe with a pop-up drain.  They seeded and strawed all disturbed areas and installed mulch inside of the stone wall which retained the Japanese maple and other plants and shrub. All of the wall is level and stable and looks great. I had gotten other estimates and they were all about the same, but I feel that no other contractor would have done as good a job.
Front walk replacement:
Removed concrete front walk which was deteriorating and hauled it away. Installed the proper multi-layer base and tamped it down.  Installed the pavers in a pleasing "I" pattern with a contrasting boarder. Replaced existing concrete step with wall block and caps that matches the pavers.  Installed polymeric sand, swept it in cracks and tamped it down. Reapplied sand, tamped it down and wet it down to activate it.  They diverted two drain spouts by the walkout in the rear of the house. They also extended an existing garden boundary, removing the grass by undercutting with shovels and moved the existing stone boundary around the new perimeter. They seeded and strawed all disturbed areas and installed mulch around the pavers. They did such a good job on the wall rebuild that I didn't even get estimates from other contractors for the walk.
Work crew:
All of the work crew on both jobs were polite and were hard workers. They were glad to answer any questions and explain what they were doing. They showed up on time and did an excellent job of cleaning up the work site when the job was completed.
Owner:
Kyle Hodges responded to phone calls and emails promptly and answered all questions. He stopped by periodically to monitor the jobs. I felt that he did more than he had to do make sure that I was satisfied with the work that was being done.

"Outdoor advantage did a superb job. They removed a large (20x12) fish pond that had been in place for over 30 years. They had to haul away about 6 tons of field stone then create a flat and level surface for the pool. They then seeded and put straw down on the bare area. They showed up on time and finished at the end of the day. Outdoor advantage is my go to company for any landscaping project. I've used them many times and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future."

"We had a very difficult jobsite. LOT of rock. On a slope. It took a while for them to get here (good companies are always busy!). Worth the wait. Crew arrived on time, worked clean, finished up on schedule and as expected. Quality was fantastic (higher grade boards, better concrete, set posts then come back the next day to do the main part b/c the posts need to set up). The owner visited the job site on the day they started and the day they finished. Really impressive commitment to the process. Every piece of this - from the sales guy to the billing to the crew was outstanding. Extremely pleased and would hire these guys again without any hesitation."

Customers say: Quality work

"The work performed by HL Design was superb. They used the existing stone to re-build our retaining wall. Once the wall was completed, they finished the top layer with pavers. The steps they built from the patio down to the lower level looks like a work of art. Truly beautiful. The workers were true craftsmen. They were on time, efficient and professional. We were so pleased with the final results that we are already planning another project for HL."

Drainage and foundation issues are common yet so often misdiagnosed. Typical warning signs are damp, leaky basements, yard flooding, erosion, foundation cracks, settling, moldy smells. Unchecked, these issues can lead to structural damage, mold, and resulting property devaluation. With so many differing methods out there, how do you know which one is actually viable? Proposals can seem conceptually similar, but design details and specs are crucial. Every problem requires a unique combination of corrective measures to achieve an effective result. The approach should never be one size fits all. Our consultants have the expertise to provide you an effective solution to your unique case. Whether it's storm water flooding and eroding your land, a stressed leaking foundation, a wet basement, you can count on our team's vast experience to apply proper design with high attention to detail. "They arrived on time, did the job cleanly, no complaints. They had to go through some concrete pavers to sink the fenceposts, which they did without any problems. Great price, great service.

FAQs for concrete work projects in Union Bridge, MD

Figuring out how many bars you need isn’t a one-size-fits-all equation. A structural engineer or experienced concrete contractor will look at your slab’s thickness, the loads it must carry, and local code requirements, then run the numbers for you. That quick consultation protects your budget and keeps the finished slab safe, level, and up to code.

Match the metal to the job. For light, thin pours like a sidewalk, welded wire mesh often does the trick. Thicker slabs—driveways, garage floors, foundations—usually call for traditional steel bars. If your site sees salt, humidity, or coastal spray, spend the extra cash on galvanized or stainless steel to fend off rust and avoid future repairs. When in doubt, a concrete pro can confirm the best fit for your project and budget.

Stainless steel costs more up front, but the alloy can last 75 years or longer with little to no rust. That longevity means fewer repairs, less maintenance, and peace of mind for structures exposed to salt, moisture, or de-icing chemicals. If you’re pouring near the coast or in a humid climate, the extra dollars now can save you multiple replacements down the road.

An engineer will review the slab’s thickness, span, soil conditions, and expected loads, then specify bar size, spacing, and grade. Skipping that step or guessing can leave you with cracked concrete or a blown budget. For a modest consultation fee, a local engineer or contractor can do the math and hand you a rebar schedule that meets code and keeps your project on solid footing.
